Do you always wear a seat belt?

Spamboule, 2 April, 2008 at 18:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 68

I regularly drive up and down the M4 going to meetings as well as driving through London and it never fails to amaze me just how many people don't wear a seat belt.

What really worries me is when I see people driving without a seatbelt on & children in the back not wearing seat belts.

Why would anyone do this?

I always wear a seat belt. OH refuses to drive if someone in the car hasn't put their seat belt on.

I always wear my belt the only person I know that doesn't is my H step-mum. She lives in SA and hardly anyone over there wears them she really struggles when she comes over here to remember to put it on.

    Yes. Always.

I don't give a stuff if fully grown adults decide not to wear a belt (as long as they're not sat behind me ?) but when they don't strap their kids in I get the rage! I reported someone the other week. Driving along the M6, belts on in the front but a woman in the back, (with belt on) sitting with a tiny baby on her knee bouncing it around and a 3ish year old stood up in the centre, holding on to her parents' headrests and quite obviously having a bit of a natter.

    oooooooooooooooh[V]

All the time, in fact it's automatic now.

In the summer when I was in Greece it felt really weird when I was getting into taxis and some didn't have any seatbelts in them, even after three weeks I was still automatically putting my hand up to my seatbelt on.

I wear one in taxis too. I don't see how this is different. You're right; a lot of people don't wear them in taxis

    ?

I just don't understand why a parent/guardian would allow that. I don't have children, but if I did, they'd be strapped in for every car journey

Did you know it's a hefty fine if you are a passenger over 14 and caught without a seatbelt - the driver will be fined if the passenger is under 14

I put my seatbelt on before turning the engine on. H thinks its funny that I always do this even just to move the car a few feet forward.

In fact the only time I don't wear a seatbelt is in yellow NYC taxis. I have no idea why this is though and ony realised it when I got into one of the new SUV type taxis and put my seatbelt on.

Always wear one, i've luckily survived breaking a windscreen with my head, i wouldn't have survived going through it or the person behind me going through me to get to it.

the only time i haven't was in a taxi in Iran which didn't have them. to be honest getting in that taxi was one of the most stupid things i've done anyway!

I have only not worn it once and it saved my life (not wearing it). One of my tyres blew and the car rolled. I got thrown out of the car, the policeman that came to the accident said it saved my life, the roof on the drivers side ended up lower than the steering wheel.
I dont know what made me not wear it that day but I have always worn it since.

I ALWAYS put my seatbelt on if I'm the driver or a passenger. If I'm driving I wont set off till everyone has got their seatbelt on. My FIL is a bit of a one for not doing it when sat in the back but I wont move without belts on!

Always, always. Nor would I drive anyone who refused to wear one.

Actually, the only time I don't is to put the car into the garage - but that is when it is already on our drive.

I always do. Plus my 2 1/2 year old daughter tells me to even when I have already put it on.
It does amaze me the amount of people I see not wearing them plus little children in the back of cars jumping about pulling faces out the back window.

To go against the grain here I have occasionally removed my baby from the car seat as for some reason she will get very distressed, to the point she's thrashing and screaming and has vomitted all over herself. If I can see she's working herself up to that I will take her out of the seat and hold her and calm her down before she gets to that state. Obviously this is when H is driving. If I'm driving I have to pull over or drive like a maniac to get where I need to be. It's not something I do lightly though.

can you not pull over and do it instead of having her on your lap whilst H is still driving? not wanting to start an argument but (heaven forbid) the consequences could be fatal ☹️

She's normally ok on short journeys, but is more likely to kick off on the motorway. By the time we can pull over at a service station or off at the next junction it's too late to calm her down. I would rather have her out of the seat for a short while than pull over on the hard shoulder.

That ad where the boy crushes his mother to death because he's not wearing a seatbelt has traumatised me into always wearing one. And I make everyone in my car wear one too.

well, i'd rather have a screaming baby than an injured one - you may trust your H's driving but what about other peoples?

I totally agree with you Trouble, however seeing my baby working herself into a state and vomitting all over herself during a one hour journey is not something that's easily endured. I take the risk to remove her from the seat, pacify her and put her back in rather than get to the point where she won't be consoled at all. I just live in the hope that she'll grow out of this soon and I won't be exposing her to the risk.

you shouldnt really do that. the most chance of auto fire is on ignition. so youre suppose dto get in, turn on the engine, and then if all ok, then put on your belt and drive off. having your belt on first can restrict a quick get out, and all advanced courses in this country teach students to do it this way.
