I've never bothered - soft water area so I don't think it's as essential as it is if you live in a hardwater area. I only need to use one washing machine tablet instead of the recommended 2 and no fabric conditioner because the water is soft enough. Saves a fortune.

Ok. Our water is water from a Loch....and the dishwasher is rubbish at dissolving the all in one tablets too, I'm thinking of going for those Fairy bursts or something instead......... I've washed a load of dishes twice over and aint doing thrm again!

    thanks for the replies, appreciated.

The guy that came to repair my mums machine told her that if the tablets weren't dissolving you should use the powder rather than a tablet and use less than the recommended dosage. If you're Scotland the chances are the water is pretty soft (I have never had to descale a kettle element in my life). I found the bursty ones were even harder to dissolve than normal tablets because the plasticy coating has to melt rather than the water washing directly all over the tablet.
