Does sponge show up on x ray? (maybe sensitive)

The Duchess, 26 January, 2009 at 09:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I know that normal everyday washing up sponges wouldnt show up on x-ray but, if you had a barium meal or a dye test, would this show it if it were in your stomach or anywhere in your digestive tract??

Stomach - yes; if it's a barium study.

Rest of your gut - hard to tell.

Very difficult question to answer with no backstory!

But in general: most things that go in, come out without any help IYSWIM....

ETA: very much depends on size...

    Thank you R-A
My cousine thinks his wife is eating it as a substitute for food and has various medical problems at present. One of them is her stomach. I'm just rushing out to an appointment now or i would elaborate but if you have some medical knowledge i'd love to pick your brains later xx
    Thanks xxxx

Hi again, I've had such a busy hectic day i'm only getting back on now. I think my initial post may be a little misleading becuase the problems are much more that eating sponge.
She's developed problems with her stomach. The first he knew about it was last christmas when she was vomiting every time she'd eaten. He said it was constant but after weeks of this she was still refusing to go to hospital. Eventually he managed to get her to hospital and never once did he manage to speak to a doctor. All he knew is what she told him. After a few exploratory examinations the decided to operate. Chris's wife told him that this operation was also exporatory. The findings, aparently a "natural gastric band" casued by scar tissue from a kidney op the year before...... He didn't even know that sort of thing could happen (neither did i so forgive my arrogance as i'm dubious because I really think she's covering up something more serious). Apparently her stomach had stopped working and the food is just sitting on top of it, supposedly, sometimes for days on end before it all comes back up in the same condition it went down.
Forgive me if this can happen i really have no idea but she's behaving very strangely indeed. She looked so i'll he thought she was going to die so dragged her to hospital, had she had the energy she'd have been kicking and screaming all the way.
She has lost about 4 stone and is still within a healthy weight for her height but she's become very ill again these last few weeks.
he's also just discovered she's been taking more than her fair share of sleep aids, both prescription and over the counter ones. She's also consistantly taking, painkillers, decongestants and antihistimines. They've got a little girl who's 6 and she has to watch her mum lie like a zombie on the couch day in day out.
He managed to get her to come clean about the pills and took her to the doctor who recommended counselling. Those appointments haven't come through yet so he just has to sit and wait. She's been vomiting badly these last couple of weeks again too and again he's worried she's seriously ill.
You know I really don't know where to go with this post or what questions to ask other than......... any ideas where Chris needs to go? what does he need to do in order to get her some help?

If a doctor had concerns for her safety (ie, if they thought she's abusing herself) would he inform my cousin?
Crikey I sound as confused as he is but he really doesnt know where to go from here.

Her issues sound like they need more than just a bit of counselling. If possible I'd try and get her back to the GP and insist on a referal to a Psychiatric service. Many people need Psychiatric services at some point in their lives, there should be no stigma in her asking for or needing these services. She sounds like she is heading for, or in the middle of, an episode that needs specialised help, sooner rather than later.
