Dress alteration quote??

Anne!, 22 November, 2010 at 20:13 Posted on Planning 0 15

I have been quoted £175 for the dress alterations at the shop that I got the dress from. That includes taking up the hem (a lot), taking the bodice in, spot cleaning and steaming, and adding a brooch onto the dress for me....

Is this the normal price..... should I shop around????

I was thinking of altering the neckline and they've quoted about £35 for that on top......

My dress shop didn't do alterations as it's so tiny, but they recommended a seamstress who worked from home. She took up the hem (and all the associated layers), added a loop so I could take up the train later in the evening, sewed in some padded booby bits (she unpicked the lining and slotted them in), and sewed a 'secret something blue' message into the hem. It cost me £65! One of the corset loops broke two days before the wedding and she mended it for free and checked all the others to make sure they were strong enough. There are some fantastic freelance seamstresses around, so see if anyone can recommend anyone, but do make sure they're au fait with wedding dresses first!

My dress shop will charge a flat fee of £165 for any alterations. Don't think this includes cosmetic stuff like adding more bling or anything though...

Thanks for the help - I forgot to say it also includes putting the loop thing in the back...

From the replies it seems the price is on the expensive side, will try to look at local seamstresses - it's hard to know without recommendations isn't it?

I live in Bolton and work in Preston - anyone know of a good seamstress in the North West?

Mine was £230 to add some sparkly tulle thick straps, pull it in a little around the bust, take up the hem with various layers and add a hook in the back.

My dress shop are charging me £90 to do the hem and £15 to add a bustle so I can tie up the train. I dont have any recommendations for a local seamstress and I would be too nervous to take it to just anyone!

The wedding dress shop where I bought mine from has a standard £40 fee - my dress went from cathedral train to tea length and had straps added for that price! Bargain compared to what everyone else has paid/been quoted

Id be inclined to just pay the extra to the shop, 'if' anything went wrong im not sure what the shop could do if it wasnt on their premises! eek but then i am a worry wart and a bit of a pessimist in things like this

Mine is £200 to take up the hem (including 3-4 layers), take up the train, take in the bodice, and realign the buttons on my button up back. It's difficult to quote exact alteration costs without reference to the dress, because a dress with lots of sparkly bits and lace will cost more than a plain dress. I will also warn that there are some BAD seamstresses out there. I'd purchased a pre-loved dress and the hem was actually lopsided by several inches ... so either the past bride had one leg shorter than the other or the seamstress couldn't cut and sew straight to save her life.

Mine is costing £50 for the straps to be shortened (it's a bit big around the top of the bust) and the train to be taken off and some length to be taken off (don't want the train, so it'll just touch the floor all the way round). That includes steaming.

That's in Liverpool Anne! - is that too far?

Mine's costing £125 to have the straps adjusted as they are too big, the hem taken up, fitting a ribbon type thing in the back which my bra strap will be threaded through so I don't have to wear a lower back convertor and for a bustle to be put in. Quite reasonable I thought ?
