Dyeing the dress

Kayleigh, 31 May, 2022 at 22:18 Posted on Planning 0 12

So. My bestie was going to donate her wedding dress to charity so I asked her if she'd let me have it instead cos its a beautiful dress which she was super happy to do.

Now... its white and I'm determined to have a red and black dress (black bodice and top layer of tulle, red underneath). So my plan is to dye it.

Has anyone successfully dyed their dress?

You’ll have to try and find out what material it is, as well as any decorations/details on it, including the thread. Different materials will pick up different amounts of dye, with some not picking up the dye at all. Really the only way to know is to try it and see what happens, but that might give you a dress which doesn’t have a consistent colour…! I’ve never dyed a wedding dress but have dyed various other things. General tips are to make sure you follow the instructions carefully. Weigh the dress so you know how much material you’re dying - the dye will have instructions for what weight of material you can dye per sachet. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I've just dyed mine! It turned out amazingly well, but most of it was natural fibre. Do you know what the composition of your dress is?

The skirt on mine was viscose and the top was viscose with a lace overlay that was a cotton/nylon mix. I dyed it navy and the skirt came out really dark navy and the lace slightly lighter - it looks really good. I've had to pay a dressmaker to change the zip over (being plastic & polyester, it didn't take the dye at all, and stood out really white against the rest of the dress) and shorten it, but once that is done, I'll have a really nice formal dress for under £50!

I'm gonna be honest, apart from the tulle and lace I have no idea what the rest of it's made of 😬 I've bought Rit all purpose dye so hopefully it'll be ok! I've also purchased a corset kit so I can take out the zip and put a corset back in! X

Not very good photos but here's mine - the dress is still wet in the second photo, but it's pretty close to how it came out once it dried (the pictures I took after it dried make it look more purple than it is). This was Dylon navy hand dye on a viscose skirt & shell with a 75% cotton 25% nylon lace top. Hope it gives you an idea of what's possible.
