First Dance Song - Rock/Indie Alternative

We are having a song called 'hell and high water' by a band called Black Stone Cherry (one of our fav bands who we are actually seeing in concert the day after our wedding) its an upbeat song as we want to be able to have fun with the first dance

We had 'the look you give that guy' by the eels. The lyrics might be a bit odd for some but it's a song we both love.

How about 'toothpaste kisses' by the maccabees? Lyrics are nice and it's not too long if you're not keen on dancing!

Ha, I love that cos it mentions vegans but was it used for a football show? A lot of people seem to associate it with football.

We're going for 'First Day of My Life' by Bright Eyes (typical, but Bright Eyes are one of my all-time favourite bands) for walking down the aisle.

And also Biffy 'Mountains' and Pearl Jam 'Low Light' in the mix somewhere! I've been totally inspired to go for 'Today' by the Smashing Pumpkins after reading this thread!

Our first dance is going to be.......... Don't know if I should tell you as we haven't told anyone, want it to be a surprise! But I will share it with you ladies; it will be a song called Crystal by Stevie Nicks, from the film Practical Magic. It has meaning to us because we had both given up on ever finding love, but secretly still holding on to a bit of hope..... there's a line in the film by Sandra Bullock's character Sally (letter to sister Gilly) where she says 'Sometimes I feel there is a hole inside of me, an emptiness that at times seems to burn. I think if you lifted up my heart to your ear you could probably hear the ocean. I have this dream of being whole, of not going to sleep each night wanting, and still sometimes when the wind is warm or the crickets sing, I dream of a love that even time will lie down & be still for. I just want someone to love me' The song has reference to 'The love that finally found me'. Sorry for the soppy waffle!!!

There is also 'Are you the one that I've been waiting for' by Nick Cave, & 'Nothing else Matters' by Metallica, I suppose the music is a bit depressing but we like the lyrics. Also 'I wish I had an Angel' by Nightwish, maybe not first dance material but it means something to us so would like it to be included somewhere!

We we're thinking about Paul wellers version of wishing on a star.. I'm not sure if the lyrics fit though? I'm walking down the aisle to elbow - perfect weather to fly. We almost went for Biffy 'Machines' because we loooove the song, especially the line " I would dig a thousand holes to lay next to you" however we know how completely inappopriate it is really for a first dance song.

In the end we went for The Girl, by City and Colour.

We found an instrumental guitar only version of Mountains on itunes for our signing register music.

Love the Bright Eyes shout out, that song First Day Of My Life is amazing and makes me tear up whenever I hear it!!!

I love Black Stone Cherry! They've done some great ballads, Things My Father Said makes me cry every time I listen to it!

We're currently thinking of nothing else matters by metallica, but my issue is that it is very long compared to some other songs, and I hate being in the limelight as it is...i know, the whole day we will be in the limelight ha ha. I was thinking of finding a shorter version, but what are peoples opinions on cutting down a classic song?

If anyone is into Metallica then try Apocalyptia's instrumental orchestral versions of One and Nothing Else Matters. I'm having them for while everyone's waiting for me haha.

We have always said this will be our first dance; it was number 1 when we met and was being played everywhere; very much our song.

We want it but know it will be very controversial however we don't just want to pick a song to please our guests- we are now thinking maybe we could start with something more 'wedding' mix into this and then fade back in to the more traditional- decisions decisions

We are having Never tear us apart but by Beck not INXS and it is going to turn into Sureshot by The Beastie Boys so we can get everyone straight up dancing.

I haven't read through the whole thread so this could have been mentioned but there is a beautiful acoustic version of mountains, it came out after we were married sadly or we would have had it ourselves as we both have a mild biffy obsession

we also had 'for lovers' when signing the register as well as 'lucky man', but to indie for mrmini but he relented. We walked out to 'kiss me'by new found glory.

sex on fire was our last song. I think we thought it would be hilarious as it's a nudge towards the steamy night of wedding sex we were to have. I fell asleep on the stairs and mrmini snored away in his pants. Hardly sex on fire eh?

I'm walking up the aisle to an instrumental version of my immortal by evanescence, then nothing else matters as first dance currently trying to find a nine inch nails song to include!!

My other half has chosen the first dance so we're having Paramore 'Still Into You'. Lyrics are fitting but just have to work out how to properly dance to it!

Planet caravan by pantera is a recent one on our list, very slow and moody!!

Well to be fair it isnt really. According to wikipedia he is 'folk rock' so I was going with that.

Folk rock ? sounds hideous doesn't it!

Obviously I really like the song else I wouldn't be considering it for first dance. I hadn't realised it would be considered such a terrible choice

Relax, Mini doesn't mean the song itself is hideous, just the description of it as "folk rock". That does sound pretty grim, let's face it.
