Getting my train removed

Haz, 30 March, 2022 at 09:53 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 8
Hello everyone, this is my first post on the board. We are getting married on 3rd September 2022 at a sailing club, where we are members. We have arranged to arrive at the venue by boat and we will need to walk both from the hotel to the boat and from the pontoon up to the club house, a couple of hundred yards each. We are walking together, as we are a same sex couple and neither of us fancied being given away. There won't be an aisle as such, our guests will be gathered outside the club house underneath the flag pole, where our celebrant will perform a short ceremony. We are having a statutory ceremony the day before for legalities.

I was lucky enough to find my dream dress in a sample sale and I have alterations booked for the beginning of July. I love my dress but I am worried that the train will become a massive pain to lug around all day and spoil my enjoyment of the day. I have seen some photos of other brides in this dress and the train looks like a bit of a mess if it isn't neatly arranged. I don't particularly like to look of bustles, worry about them breaking and there is a likelihood that this is how the dress will look for most of the day. The dress is already much grander that what I had imagined so I'm not worried about looking 'bridal' enough.
I am planning on asking my seamstress to remove the train but I'm worried that she and my best woman will try to talk me out of it at the fitting. I know that it is possible to have it removed, as I have seen the same dress on ebay where the bride has had it done, and I liked the look. How do I convince them that this is what I want to do?

I think you should really impress upon them that it’s your dream dress BUT the train is not appropriate for your venue. It’s a common alteration to make, so I don’t think the seamstress will be too taken aback. I was very conscious of my venue when choosing a dress, you don’t want to spend time worrying about it or constantly fixing it. If they do try and talk you out of it just politely but firmly say you agree it’s lovely, but it really isn’t practical/suitable for your venue and you want it removed

I'd be really interested to hear how this goes and how expensive it is to have a train removed, if you don't mind sharing after you've spoken to the seamstress?

My wedding's not till next year but my dream dress also has a train that's longer than practical for my venue... I'd kind of resigned myself to a bustle/the train becoming a sandy mess by the end of the day, but you're making me consider asking for it to be shortened!

    Thanks, Natalie. Very good advice.
I will let you know how it goes, Chloe. The prices she has quoted me are very reasonable, so we'll see how much it comes to.
I'm short, so if I only get the front shortened, the train will be another 6 inches longer on me. However, getting the train shortened to a puddle and also getting a bustle, would be two lots of alteration costs, which seemed unnecessary given I'm not bothered about the train.
I think the thing that made me doubt myself is that in one bridal shop where I tried dresses on, I mentioned getting the the train removed and the owner said, well it won't be a wedding dress if you remove the train.

In terms of not being a wedding dress, that is a ridiculous statement! My dress is tea length so no train or to the floor but is still a wedding dress! You do what you want, others can have an opinion but you dont hat to agree, you shouldnt have to convince them, it is your choice, The only thing would be if the seamstress thinks it will alter the dress too drastically and the look you want is not achievable. I would ask them to pin it as to how it will be if you do it, it may change the fall/fit of the dress so is best to check it before you go ahead and cut it. But if it is what you want then you should go for it, is your dress and you need to be comfortable with how it looks. It is also worth looking to see if it can have a hook strap on the side seam you can then hook over your wrist for the bits where you ned to pick it up but can then drop down again later as this will be far cheaper as is just a loop of ribbon.

I think the most important thing is what you want and will feel comfortable in it is a lovely dress and would still be lovely without but on the fact you will be doing a lot of walking plus having it on all day i would go for it xx💗

Comfort is very important to me. I commented in one shop that the fabric wasn't comfortable and the manager said it wasn't about comfort, it was about what it looked like. I decided to look elsewhere if she wasn't prepared to take my feelings into account. I love this dress because the chiffon is really soft and flowy but it is also very supportive.

Omg I completely agree! I tried on dresses that looked absolutely beautiful, but were horrifically uncomfortable and I just said no way, I want to be comfortable on the day, and I decided pretty quickly that the feel of the dress was at least, if not more important to me than the look. I ended up in a boutique that were so attentive and accommodating, when I explained that I’d tried on beautiful dresses elsewhere but hated how they felt the assistant ran off and came back with the most exquisite silk dress - beautiful *and * comfortable (and silk/chiffon just feels and moves so beautifully). You were right to leave that shop, it’s your opinion that matters most about your wedding dress after all!
