Groom's Attire

JayneyB, 13 July, 2011 at 10:11 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi Everyone!

I just thought I would get an idea on what people think...

We are getting married at the very modern looking Lowry Theatre next November at 2.30pm in the afternoon. Now, my H2B would like him, his bestmen and our fathers to wear tails. Now I really don't mind I have already asked no to top hats as he really doesn't have the head for them, but my mother thinks its a bit 'funny' !!

Do fellow Hitchers think it would look odd having a Morning suit an a non traditional setting in the afternoon? Will guests notice/care? And is there a way I can maybe make the suit a bit less formal?

I am LOVING planning our day and still gearing up to dresses.. I'll get there.

Hope everyone's planning is going well! x

Tbh, I doubt that very many people (if anyone) would even notice! I know that I wouldn't. It's your and your h2b's choice what suit to choose. I think we're going to go for morning suits too, they are my personal favourite. x

I don't think it really matters much what sort of suit the groom and his assistants wear, in all honesty - it needs to be something that they are comfortable in as much as anything else.

To make it 'less formal', why not add a waistcoat that's a little different'? I got mine from mytuxedo.co.uk and although mine was just plain to match the bridesmaids dresses, there's no reason why you couldn't get one with a pattern on it that matches their colours. Or you could get a bow tie and go for the Dr Who look Smiley smile

    What colours are you having?

See!! I didn't think it'd matter either, they'd look good i think, Mother may be a tad old fashioned!

The colours we are looking at are dark reds and purples with hints of orange and green in the flowers! Bridesmaids I would like in black with coloured sashes and accessories. Whites, creams, ivories and such will be dictated by the dress! Which I still haven't started looking for!! Hmm should put that on my to do list!! ha ha ha!

    How about something like

    https://www.dobell.co.uk/victorian-red-polyester-jacquard-waistcoat

    https://www.dobell.co.uk/orange-poly-dupion-waistcoat

    https://www.dobell.co.uk/purple-poly-dupion-waistcoat

I reckon one of those under a black suit with a matching tie would look pretty good - although once he takes his jacket off the orange one might look a bit too much like a high vis jacket!

If you and your groom are happy, then go for the tails.

We had tails for groom, best man, both dads and both brothers (our brothers were our witnesses and we wanted to make them feel special). We got married in a register office and although our evening was fairly formal, we did have an informal afternoon tea in a church hall straight after the ceremony and it looked fine. Nobody said "you're dressed very formally"!

^^ in the register office, men in tails

I can't find any photos of the afternoon tea showing men in tails apart from this one (my brother is behind the counter helping to serve tea) but it honestly looked fine Smiley smile

    Hi,

Sorry I am late to this thread but if it is OK, can I put my two pennies worth in?

To me a morning suit is one of the most traditional types of attire for a wedding. I would normally recommend a morning suit for a more traditional venue, to be worn alongside a more traditional dress. But that is not how it is used exclusively, it is very common for all types of weddings and a perfectly acceptable mode of dress for the groom and his party.

If this is the type of suit that both you and the groom are happy with, then that is great, it will work, look great and I am sure he will be complimented on his choice of attire, the morning suit is one of the most flattering garments a man can wear. It is one of the most definitively masculine suits you will find, it emphasizes broad shoulders, slimming at the waist and elongates the legs.

Now having said all that, if you were to be true to the modern wedding 'theme' then a morning suit is the incorrect thing to wear, it is 100's of years old in style and design. If I were talking to you in my shop I would suggest a more fashion conscience wedding suit, a suit that would have some of the features of a morning suit but also using more up to date design to compliment the contemporary theme. With this in mind you would be looking at lounge suits or ceremony suits that do not fulfill any traditional etiquette criteria and are therefor difficult to quantify with any definition other than wedding suit.

    Traditional Morning Suit:

    Modern Morning Suit:

    Modern Ceremony Suit

    Lounge Suit:

Maybe wait until your OH has had a chance to to try-on suits before making a concrete decision on which style to wear. The style of his suit will also want to compliment the style of dress you are wearing, so once you have the dress, make some appointments to try-on different styles, designs etc. You may be surprised at the choice which is available outside of a Moss Bros brochure.

JayneyB, if you have any opportunity to head to Barking in East London and visit BespokeTailor's shop, I can highly recommend it, as have a lot of other Hitchers.

Sadly I paid a visit a long time after I needed to and only ended up buying a shirt, but if I'd have come across it six months earlier I'd probably have bought my suit there. I still drool (or at least as close as a guy can drool) over that silver grey suit that's in the shop...

OH was convinced he wanted a lounge suit, after trying different styles on at the tailors he ended up choosing tails, I must say they are very flattering. OH is tall and broad and they balanced him out well.

I hadn't seen ceremony suits before but they are a good combination of the two i think the ones that bespoke has posted are very dapper!

Oh I got caught up answering this post and have only just realised I never really answered the OP's questions.

No Top Hats - Good thing, most head shapes no longer fit top hats very well. (evolution me thinks?)

I woudl suggest maybe using the tail suit with a (maybe slimmer tie) tie, rather than a cravat, this would look give a more modern look. Maybe not using a brocade waistcoat (swirly one) would help too. In fact maybe forget the whole wedding waistcoat thing and have a matching waistcoat to the suit. Avoid striped trousers altogether (too traditional). Maybe slightly controversial but what about a blue morning suit with brown shoes? This would be quite modern and a little funky.

AJ, Thanks ? (i never had you down as a WoW player, never really got into it myself but always fancied it, I grew up with RPG's and still enjoy diving into a good rpg at times, never really found the time for WoW though, I might give it a go!)
