HELP! Cracked engagement ring,

Knitterjules, 5 December, 2013 at 17:04 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and looking for a bit of advice.

My platinum engagement ring (bought and re-sized July/ August 2013) has cracked following some pretty hefty clapping at a gig at the weekend. I was wearing a Swarovski nirvana ring on my right hand. Has anyone had experience of this? Thought I'd ask before heading back to the jewellers. Thanks in advance X

I Can't help but just thought I'd say Hi!

I'd be straight back to jewellers. Looks like a definite weak spot - I guess from where they resized it. I had mine resized and I asked about how they did it because it was quite a change and I was worried the force would pull the prongs on the stone slightly and make it more prone to pinging out but they told me it was heated and sort of shrunk with the excess metal being redistributed around the whole ring if that makes sense?!? Mine is platinum too.

    Hi DrBuffles!

It was re-sized a half size down, but I definitely believe it should not have happened, no matter how hard I was clapping! I'll have to wait & see what the jewellers say X

Welcome! that's some pretty hefty clapping! I'm by no means and expert but I don't think this should be happening. From what I know from watching some one resize a ring, that looks like the kind of position they'd make a cut so it seems like they haven't properly soldered it/heated it/whatever the technical jewellery type term is, as it should be seamless. As that's how they cut it when sizing it, I would imagine it should be fairly easily fixed. hopefully someone with slightly more technical knowledge than me will come and post too! Hope you get it sorted

    Oh no! Smiley sad
I'm also pretty sure that shouldn't have happened. I'm a Vet Nurse, so have quite a physical job and use a lot of cleaning products etc and specifically asked the jeweller if I should be particularly careful and she basically said no, don't worry, you'll get scuffs and marks on it easily, which should buff out, but you'd have to really knock it to damage it; so I don't think clapping should have broken it!
    Hope you get sorted

Absolutely go back to where it was purchased/resized. You can see the crack is where the join would've been from resizing, so I bet that's where the mistake was.

    Good luck!

I wouldn't be very happy if that were my ring either. Did you have any news over the weekend at the jewellers?

Well. I took it back to the jewellers and it's been sent back for 'investigation', the lady at the jewellers agreed that it should never have happened. She was pretty sure it will get repaired. The bad news is I'll be without my ring for a couple of weeks ?.
