history types...what has che guevara got to do with eva peron?

kierenthecommunity, 29 August, 2008 at 23:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Voldie, mr c and i went to see 'evita' tonight at the leeds grand, and it was totally fab. ? however one thing puzzled us, in that the narrator guy was che guevara. i've seen the movie and the narrator bloke, played by antonio banderas was called che, but was just some random member of the public who saw through the hype of her, etc.

ok, my knowledge of south american history is pretty limited, but i have no idea what he has to do with argentina

a quick perusal of wiki has told me he was born there, but although he went to loads of latin american countries (mainly cuba, guatemala and mexico) he really had naff all to do with argentine politics

anyone cleverer then me (or voldie or mr c ?) have a clue?

They never met as far as we know but they were contemporary. I think it's just a narrative thing isn't it?

Wikipedia says "After leaving Peronist Argentina in the mid-1950s, Guevara moved to Cuba. As Castro's collaborator, he came to occupy a position of spiritual leader in Cuba's government that was arguably analogous to Evita's role in Peronist Argentina."

No connection at all other than he was Argentinian, as far as I know. Not seen Evita but CG was opposed to the right wing Juan Peron.

I understand there's no evidence that they ever actually met, it's just an odd (and totally unneccesary) plot device for the show. I guess ALW just thought "ooooh, let's stick a name in that everyone will recognise"

It's a fab show, though. I'm dead jealous, I'd love to see it live.

I'm fairly certain that the character Che in Evita is not meant to be Che Guevara at all, it's just a name that was used rather than the actual person.

the one in the show was definately CG though, cos a) he was dressed like him and b) it said it was him in the programme ?

Ah - so THAT'S why half the audience went 'oooooooh no' when I saw it on Monday and they announced that the understudy was playing Che! Makes sense now. I had no idea who it was supposed to be. Incidentally the understudy was flipping fab and got a big cheer at the end and looked so chuffed bless him. It was really fab wasn't it, much better than I expected!
