i don’t like wedding dresses…

Jenna, 28 July, 2022 at 16:04 Posted on Wedding Attire 1 16
Has anyone had any experience of essentially looking at wedding dresses online… and not liking them? I have yet to see a picture of a dress that I would really like to try on! We get married August 2023 so people tell me I should be looking from next month, but I have no motivation to!

If anyone has had a similar experience I would love to know the outcomes, and any suggestions for wedding dress alternatives then please go ahead!

I will be buying online as I need a budget friendly dress since I’m only having a ceremony then going on honeymoon. I’m going to be looking at Monsoon, they have all kinds of styles and are beautiful, great prices too from £249-£700

Try looking online. I bought mine from a mail order supplier and loved it so much more than any boutique dress I saw.

Or look at getting one made to order.

Or just don't wear a 'wedding dress' - if you get married in it, then it's a wedding dress, so think about the kind of clothes that make you feel extra special and dressed up, and go for that.

I would suggest booking an appointment at a bridal salon. Wedding dresses look a lot different on than they do in pictures. Choose a mid week appointment. If you are taking someone with you, choose someone who you trust to give you an honest opinion but who won't ruin your confidence. Keep an open mind. Try on different shapes, a line, mermaid, ball gown and different lengths. This should give you an idea of what you do and don't like on yourself. And if you still don't like any of them or envisage yourself liking any of them, then wear something else.

I thought I would wear something alternative but once I had found the dress for me I knew it was right.

I suggest looking in your wardrobe at the style of outfits you wear when you dress up and look to buy something new along those lines from your go to shops rather than bridal. If you don't wear white often then buy something with colour. If you don't wear long dresses/skirts then buy something shorter or even trousers if that's more your style. You still want to feel like yourself on your wedding day.

I didn’t like any wedding dresses either. I was happy to look at any dresses and ended up looking at wedding guest dresses or bridesmaid dresses. However I did have a problem with altering a dress and ended up in John Lewis and actually buying a lovely ivory wedding dress. It was simple and didn’t cost the earth. Lots of people commented on my dress and asked where I got it from. The people who turned up the length also said it was the prettiest dress they had seen that year! So my advice is evening/occasion dresses or wedding dresses from places like John Lewis, House of Fraser or Monsoon.

I second all the advice above. I went for a tea length wedding dress as I didn’t want all the volume of a big dress and worried I would trip!. It was also cheaper than a usual wedding dress. It was beautiful and everyone loved it. i don’t like wedding dresses… 1

I was browsing dresses online for over 5 months and nothing was exciting me. I knew styles I definitely didn’t like but never saw anything I could imagine myself actually wearing for my budget under £1k… Then one day I was scrolling through StillWhite and the one just caught my attention. Very boho vibes, new with tags, in my price range and my size!

I then looked up the designer and found a boutique about an hours drive from where I live which stocked it so I was able to go try it on before committing to an online purchase. I tried on some other styles whilst at the boutique but knew this one ticked all my boxes in terms of style and price so just went for it and ordered it the next day.
So I guess my advice is just keep looking on all different websites at all different styles and eventually you’ll work out what you do and don’t like. But like other have said it definitely helps if you can try some on too as what looks good on the model on the internet is quite different to how it’ll be on you in real life!

I really would recommend going to a shop and trying different styles on. They look so different on you and your body shape than they do on models or on hangers. At least then it will help narrow it down or at least let you know if you don’t want a traditional dress at all. Good luck!

You can also get your dress made. There are so many online vendors (Etsy shops to start with) that make this an affordable option these days. It's a really special experience.

I felt like this. The idea in my head didn’t match anything I saw and I felt like I was the only bride not looking forward to wedding dress shopping. My best friend told me just to go and try a bunch of things on with no expectation to buy and see what I liked or didn’t like, so I did. I came away with very clear ideas of what I didn’t want (Tulle!) and some ideas for what I did.

The next appointment I had was at a store with much more variety and I brought my “bride tribe”. Number 3 was the dress. 😊
I got some alterations done so would also advise a store with a good seamstress service. I bought it 6 months before wedding so don’t panic!
    Good luck!

Thank you for asking and thanks to everyone for your tips. Funnily enough… I saw a dress online (just one!) that I did actually like, I went and tried it on and bought it! I also tried a few others on while I was there but it just highlighted how much I preferred this one. It just shows you… when you know, you know!
