Magician no show

Jo Walker-Morecroft, 28 July, 2022 at 20:07 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 9
Hi all,
My husband and I were so very lucky and had the most amazing wedding last Saturday!
The day was only marred by one thing…we had booked a magician and he didn’t show. He also made no contact whatsoever. We have tried texting and emailing asking for an explanation but have not received any communication whatsoever. We had paid a £150 deposit. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do next? Thanks,Jo

Really sorry this has happened. you say you paid a deposit, but did you pay your balance prior to the wedding? I would say that if you hadn't then that may be why. Did you have a contract that was signed and had terms around payment prior to event or exit clauses. When did you last have contact prior to the day as I guess you would have had a final planning meeting. sorry for all the questions, it is hard to say based on your OP what to do without knowing the terms of supply you had agreed.

    Hi Charlotte,
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. It seems that you are exactly right….the contractural agreement was that I should have paid in full prior to the event and this I missed. I wrote to him 5 days prior detailing everything and saying how much we were looking forward to seeing him etc etc. I even spoke to him a couple of days later…he was busy and couldn’t speak. At no point did he remind me of payment which I find very sad and disappointing…especially when I know that he had originally been unsure if he could make it to his evening client on the same day.
Totally my fault …I hadn’t paid which is fair enough. But to receive no communication since is upsetting and unkind. Thanks again Jo

That is still not great he didn't nudge you or make contact, I don't get these suppliers that ghost people, is not nice. At least you were not out of pocket for the full amount. As disappointing as it is I guess is one of those things you just have to suck up, at least it wasn't a major bit like the caterer!

Sounds like it was a genuine oversight that you hadn’t paid him. He could have prompted you. I agree that to not reply to your messages is unkind. It’s also unprofessional.
Glad it didn’t affect your day though. X

    Hi Sophie
I’ve had a go at posting something but his FB account doesn’t allow posts. I’m not sure what else I could do but will look in to it.
Thanks for the steer Smiley smile)Jo

Hmm, sounds like you might not have been the first couple he let down. I'm always a bit suspicious of businesses that don't allow reviews - usually it's because they get too many negative ones!

While it was obviously your error not paying the full amount beforehand, any reputable vendor would have at least sent you a reminder, especially as your messages to him before the wedding made it quite obvious that it was an oversight on your part, and that you were still expecting/wanting him to come.
