Medics- burst burn blister, now septic (ewwww eugh!)

LouM, 13 November, 2008 at 12:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 21

I was staying over at my parents' house one night last week, in my old room at the very very top of their house, which I don't think they've heated since 1998. ? I was sooooo cold, so I got myself a hot water bottle to take to bed- one of the rubber kinds. I think the water was too hot, and I must have fallen asleep with my leg on a hotspot because I awoke with a painful angry blister on my shin, which over the course of the day developed into a huge water blister (the size and shape of a creme egg). ? The blister was intact for 4 days, until saturday when I knocked it and it burst. I cleaned it with salt water and iodine and put on germolene and a dressing, and I've continued like this, but now that the [TMI] blister flap has fallen off, I can see that underneath it is all lime jelly like. The area around it is all red and angry. Helllllp. There is no way I'll be able to get to a doctor for at least week- is there anything else I can do? ?

I would go to a minor injury unit - It may seem petty, but I know the local burns unit near me deals with this type of thing & it's not a minor complaint to be dealt with.

    Hope it's OK Lou

Ouch, not sure but it sounds really painful. I don't tend to put anything on burst blisters, i prefer to leave them exposed to the air to dry. I hope you get some better advice than mine ?

Creme eggs? Lime jelly? Why are you describing your blister as food? ?

I have no idea about what you can do, I would probably use savlon, but that might not be best, medically. It does sound horribly painful though, poor you!

The lime green jelly stuff could be your fat layer. I know that sounds minging, but basically, if you burn yourself deeply enough, it goes beyond the red "skin" layers and down to the green "fat" layers.

Do not put anything else on it. Avoid touching it. Germs are the biggest hazard with burns. Cover it and get yourself to A&E.

Go to the walk in centre or out of hours centre. Sounds like it needs looking at.

    WSS.

I'd put cling film or a clean plastic bag on it and get it seen to. It's big enough that it really does need looking at.

Crikey, we don't have walk-in centres up here, so it will have to be A&E when OI get home tonight. I feel very silly.

Don't feel silly, you're far more injurederer than many of the time wasters who inhabit A&E (in my experience).

Lou - Do you have PMI that covers treatment at home?

If after A&E you need further care (redressed etc..) your PMI will allow you to have this at home or at the office.

MrJMP used this with his manky nat bite last year.

You could use say a Harrods or Selfridges bag, it doesn't have to be Netto or anything like that.

It could just be the normal way things heal. Dead and dying neutraphils often look like a layer of 'puss' and the area would be expected to be red and inflammed for the first 2-5 days.

I would still get it looked at though, as (as has already been said) burns can be very nasty and you need to protect yourself from infection.

If it's red, hot and sore looking, it could well be infected.

Green stuff: could just be slough. Are you well otherwise? Fever? Feeling poorly?

Anyway, needs looking at, I reckon. Or I could just post you some antibiotics but I might get struck off! ?

? have you got a camera phone ?

Well, there's a line in John Betjeman's poem about Slough referring to "That man... who washes his repulsive skin/In women's tears".

    Have you tried that?
