Most Overdone Wedding Trends

So there is a thread on the wonderful (albeit very snarky) getoffmyinternets.net at the moment discussing the worst or most overdone wedding trends. Here are some of the things that have made the list - what do people think? Who's having/had any of these...? (note, these are direct quotes, not my opinions!)

Mason jars

"As two families become one, we ask that you choose a seat and not a side." signs

Macaroons

Chalkboard signs

Cupcakes (or another individual dessert item) instead of cake

Everything looking like it's in a barn

Photos where the bride and groom hold up signs that say things like "Happily Ever After!"

Fedoras and hipster bowties on the groom and groomsmen

Converse as a shoe choice for the groomsmen

Toms as a shoe choice for the bridal party after they ditch their heels

"Love is sweet, take a treat!" candy bar or dessert table banners

Intricate photo booth backdrops

Cowboy boots

Super personalized and overly elaborate wedding favors. I don’t care that you stayed up the last 8 nights making salsa in adorable customized jars—I can’t take that *** back with me on a plane.

dogs with floral collars being used as the "ring bearer".

Disney-themed weddings

llittle kids holding "Here comes the bride" signs

Flower crowns

Bunting

French nail tips

Naming your tables after places you went on dates or whatever

those really tall floral arrangements and the crystals dripping from everything and the over-the-top colored lighting all over the place

making your guests use Instagram hashtags like you're a celebrity

Choreographed dances

strapless wedding gowns – they all look the same, they aren't flattering and they are often not appropriate for daytime wear or for church

the giant picture frames couples hold while posing for photos

At the start of this wedding-planning-hulabaloo, I fleetingly had the thought about wanting 'original' touches to our wedding. The truth is, nothing at a wedding is ever really original, unless you really do have a crazy flash of artistic inspiration. Luckily I snapped out of that quickly enough, and just got on with arranging a day without too much worry about the 'look' of it all.

I do like the look of 'vintage' decor, with your old mason jars, bunting, birdcages etc, but having seen that at 3 weddings last year, plus all over pinterest and wedding sites, yup, it does seem like the same-old-same-old boring tat. But that's just it - it really isn't. It's lovely to look at, and if you don't happen to be of an age where all your mates are getting married and you're planning your own wedding too, you won't have come across this stuff before. As someone else said - all the aunties and the older/younger guests will appreciate the beauty of it, even if a small cohort of guests (all late-20s women) snipe about it 'being done before'.

Everyone just needs to have whatever they damn well like at their own wedding - whatever that suits them. Ok, so in truth I did steer away from birdcages after seeing so many of them last year, but because I would have found them boring myself having seen them around so much, and not because I was worried about them lacking originality.

The only one on this list we had was my fault - the strapless dress! Haha. I don't see how they're unflattering though. Admittedly some people really shouldn't wear them but on others they look great.

I must say though I never used pinterest - we already knew what we wanted so there was no point.

I just re-read that list. If food can be over-used at weddings (cupcakes, macaroons.... heaven help us), I nominate chicken.

    Chicken is soooo last season.

Two out of ten so I guess I am classed as just about acceptable :p

I have been saving jam/curry/every bloody jar for months now and decorating them with my family. Also, i've never had a french manicure before so I'm excited to get it done Smiley smile

Lol I personally find most of these very tacky and wouldn't want them... we off the list are having:

cowboy boots (for the groom as we where cowboy boot everyday and he isnt a shoe person - but I cringe every time I see cowboy boots with a dress)

the dance maybe a little choreographed before hand as the awkward shuffle looks just as bad but dont fancy 'dirty dancing' or 'flash dancing' lol (unless im drunk which wont be choreographed lol)

I will have some crystals on the centerpieces... but hopefully not OTT

im not sure what the barn one means... is that just getting married in a barn because that can be cute imho (even though we probably wont be in a barn)

or just plain funny! H cant dance to save his life, showed him some steps. that went to pot in 6 beats, then awkward shuffling. then jeering from the best man which resulted in me dragging him on with us for a 'group shuffle' or mosh, followed by us doing the can can with the band. it was the best.

lol, in our case it's me that can't dance!!! OH is great, but I have no sense of rhythm at all so it's going to be awkward shuffle from us. Personally, the choreographed dance would fill me with dread!!

Hurrah! A thinly veiled 'what don't you like at weddings' thread.

Lolz, yeah, that's pretty much what the original thread on GOMI was. I didn't copy every item that was posted - the post would have been a mile long! But it's interesting to see what people like and dislike. I was especially interested in views on strapless dresses as it seems from flashes on here that more people have them than not.

I agree with everyone else, unless you're planning a wedding how do you even know about these things? Even more 'quirky' ideas aren't really that, people have been getting married for too long for anything to be new! Off the list I don't think we'll be having any of these things, hoping to learn a few dance steps but it certainly won't be choreographed and my dress is strapless but having straps added but our wedding will no doubt look like a million others that have gone before but we won't care because it will be the only one that will be ours!

I hadn't heard of majority of things on this list til I joined hitched ?

I have a couple of things on that list, I wonder if anyone sits in the house genuinely offended over people sitting in the house talking about whats overdone ?

I hope not. Like others have said pretty much everything has been done already but we put our own spin on it which makes it different. At the end of the day all of our weddings will be unique because of the people taking part.

I've gone mega fluffy in my last days to go, eww, cheesy! ??

I agree with most posters on here, if you have not been married before then all these things are new to you. I like some if the items on the list eg the choose a seat not a side, I have a lot of family and h2b does not therefore a sign like that would be useful.

That's because all the dresses in the shops are strapless!!! At least 85% of them, in every shop I went to.

I didn't want strapless, but didn't want cap sleeves or full sleeves, and damn was it hard work to find a dress!

This! I second this - a non-strapless Dress that is also tea length is nigh on impossible.

I've edited down to the ones we will be having, regardless if they're overdone!

    Mason jars

Cupcakes (or another individual dessert item) instead of cake

Everything looking like it's in a barn - bit tough to avoid really as we're getting married in a barn!

"Love is sweet, take a treat!" candy bar or dessert table banners

Super personalized and overly elaborate wedding favors. I don’t care that you stayed up the last 8 nights making salsa in adorable customized jars—I can’t take that *** back with me on a plane.

    Bunting

This is not a trend but the thing I hate the most about weddings is people trying to be different just for the sake of being different, turning their wedding day into a bit of a show, and poking fun at other peoples choices

The funny things is there never seems to be much trouble at all on these threads until people join up specifically to cause an argument or two - I think that Hitchers on the whole take them in the spirit that they're meant.

I've not got anything off the list, but now I'm feeling a bit un-trendy so might have to pick something! I could definitely do the french nail tips - it's years since I've had them done!
