***MrsShep's wedding report! Flashy***

MrsShep, 9 November, 2014 at 10:19 Posted on Planning 0 42

The start

We don’t have a romantic how we met story, we met at work. I started on the 6th April 2010, and I clocked him straight away, but it took a month before we spoke to each other. After a while I realised he was very shy, so I took the plunge and asked him out on a date! So on the 10th June 2010 (a Thursday) we went on our first date. We sat all night talking (and kissing!) we were so focused on each other than we hadn’t even realised that the bar had filled with students that were graduating!

Our relationship started slowly, partly due to wariness of mixing business with pleasure (his words!) but mostly due to his personal wariness, but that’s another story. It was difficult for me to rein it in, but I stuck with it, because I knew he was special J He finally told me he loved me at Christmas, and I cried, I was so happy!

In February 2011 I moved into my own flat. I asked him if he wanted to move in with me (partly because of his living situation) but it was too soon. In August, he was finally ready, and he moved in.

After a LOT of wedding talk from me, and my family (they adore him) we got engaged! He took me to a hotel the night before my birthday this year (saying it was my birthday present!) We went out for a lovely meal, and then when we got back he trailed rose petals up to the ring box on the pillow! He let me take it, then took it from me, and got down on one knee! So uncharacteristically romantic, it was amazing.

We planned to get married in June 2015, close to our 5yr anniversary. However, my grandparents were desperate to be there, and my mum really wanted us to bring it forward. So after talking it through, we decided to go for it! We chose the first available date our venue had, and went from there! We had to be super organised (read I, he didn’t do a lot!) but we managed it.

I'm not going to write a lot about the hen and stag do's, I'll just tell you that I went to Brighton with my bridesmaids, and he went to prague with his best man. I had the best weekend, we had so much fun! The best bit was champagne and cupcakes on the beach Smiley smile

The lead up

Wednesday

Our last day at work. We had a presentation, everyone had signed a card and put money in which was lovely. One step closer to seeing the pyramids! After work I went to pick up my hoop from the dress shop which was nice, they were all excited for me.

Thursday

We spent Thursday morning making sure we had everything that we hadn’t already taken down to my parent’s house, like cufflinks, and my brolly! We finished off our packing for our honeymoon, triple checking we had all the paperwork, and the we set off to my parent’s, via the barbers to make sure hubby to be was well groomed for the day. Then we prepared ourselves for the over excitement, as my Mum was fit to burst!

Friday

We spent Friday morning making sure everything was ready to go to the venue, including dying the oil for the oil lamps we were using for our centrepieces. We had already chosen the colour (we thought) but decided it was a little too blue, and a bit washed out. So after a few more drops of blue here, and a couple more drops of yellow there, we were happy. Then we put all the thank you pressies into their bags and labelled them up, it looked like Christmas! So with the living room full of mirror plates, oil lamps, shells, suits, presents etc, we waited. Soon bridesmaid L arrived, and then after a terrible journey bridesmaid W arrived, having dropped off the cake! I was so excited, but she wouldn’t let us see, it was to be a surprise on the day. Then Best Man A arrived, and after introductions to my parents, we loaded up his car with the contents of the living room, and I kissed my husband to be goodbye. I couldn’t believe the next time I would see him would be walking up the aisle! He and A were staying at the hotel, and spent his last night of freedom eating steak and having a few beers. That left my Mum, Dad, Brother, Me and L and W. We had dinner (roast pork, nothing smelly and gentle on everyone’s stomachs) and then our hair and makeup lady, B arrived, a friend of L, to do our nails. The four girls had their nails done, Mum opting for clear, me for a blush pink with a shimmer, and bridesmaids for a hot pink to match their flowers. The bridesmaids went off to wash their hair with strict instructions of two shampoos and no conditioner, and I chatted to B about who should go first etc for tomorrow. It was decided that W would go first as she was having hot rollers, and we would start at 7:15am! Ouch. So we waved goodbye, and we all trotted off to bed to get a good night’s sleep.

    Saturday, the Big Day!

    The morning

I woke up just before 7am, and I was so pleased I’d managed to get a good night’s sleep. It seemed that everyone woke around the same time, as we all met on the landing! My Mum gave me a hug and said happy Wedding day! My Brother blearily announced Merry Christmas, and I hugged him too, then my bridesmaids, and then there was a quiet knock on the door, B was here and it was time to get started! W sat down and they started with the hot rollers, and I tentatively peeked outside. The weather was exactly what we’d hoped for! Slightly cloudy so we wouldn’t have lots of sweating and squinting, but dry, and about 20 degrees. Yay! I’d been worried about an end of September wedding, but we even decided I didn’t need my brolly after all, although the pashminas went in my Brother’s car (but we never used them) Mum had gone out to the hair dressers, so I sat down and had breakfast with Dad, which was lovely. Scrambled egg on toast, I was determined no one was allowed to smell like bacon, so it had been banned from the house! Then I trotted off to have my shower as my hair needed to be wet. So then it was my turn in the chair. I threw the timings out slightly so L was half way through having her hair done when I butted in!

I had my hair done, and then B finished L’s hair before starting my makeup. Half way through my makeup, the florist arrived. The flowers were perfect, and I was so pleased. The only slight argument of the day happened at this point though, as I couldn’t move to check everything I assumed Mum would have, but when I asked her about my Nanna’s corsage, which was being delivered to the venue along with buttonholes and the top table arrangement, she didn’t know whether they’d got it. Cue me being a bit miffed until the florist arrived at the venue and everything was confirmed.

At some point, the photographer arrived! I’d put all my shoes and jewellery out, and we hung the dress on the curtain rail in the dining room, so she pottered around taking photos, and then we realised I needed to get in my dress before she left! So in I went, in the middle of the living room as it was the only place big enough for all that dress! The girls laced me in, the photographer took a few more photos, and then she was off. It was all go in the house at this point, with everyone trying to make sure they were ready by the time the car arrived. No such luck, the car was early! We had a few issues with the buttonholes but makeup lady B came to rescue, and off my brother went, armed with the order of the days, and all our overnight bags! So then we were ready. I was determined I didn’t want to be late, so after a few pictures with the car, we all piled in, Mum, Dad, Me and Bridesmaids (I booked a Daimler limo so we could all travel together) and off we went. Everyone had been saying they couldn’t believe how calm I was (other than the slight blip with the flowers) and I was surprised too. I knew hubby to be hadn’t done a runner (Auntie text Mum confirming he was having breakfast, Brother confirmed he was there when he arrived) so I felt fine, and I knew I was doing the right thing, I just couldn’t stop smiling.

I’d been so determined not to be late, and we just sailed through what is normally terrible traffic, so we were early! We drove around a square 4 times before pulling up, and the guests were all still downstairs, as hubby to be was meeting with the registrars! I did flap slightly at that point, and my mum got out of the car to go and try and herd all the guests upstairs (the ceremony room was on the fifth floor!)

All the guests upstairs, it was time to go. My Brother came down and escorted my Mum, and then it was just the 4 of us. We went up, and as I got into the room off the main room I could hear the song we’d chosen for the guests arriving playing. I spoke to the registrar’s, and then it was time.

    Ceremony to speeches

I took my Dad’s arm, the music changed, the girls fanned out my train, and then we were off! As we rounded the corner, I saw the Best Man say oh my god! And then Mr S came into view, and the waterworks started! I cried all the way down the aisle and for some of the ceremony too, but thankfully not big red blotchy eyes crying. I tried to focus on the words we were saying and the promises we were making to each other, but it still passed in a bit of a blur. And then all of a sudden it was time to kiss the bride, and everyone cheered! We signed the register, and then we were off back down the aisle as Mr and Mrs S, I’m surprised my smile didn’t split my face!

Everyone headed back downstairs, and then it was time for champagne. The photographer started clicking away, and then she said she wanted photos in the car, and that we should hop in for a few photos down by the beach huts too. (We had already agreed we wouldn’t do this as it would take us away from our guests for too long, but I got caught up in the moment. This is the one regret of the wedding, as it means we missed out on photos I really wanted with guests because we ran out of time) We popped open the bubbly in the car, and then we drove down to the beach huts to have some nice, and some sillier photos. We got back in the car and went back, and then it was a crazy rush to try and get as many photos as possible!

We were called over by the hotel staff, and we stood and received all of our guests into dinner. Then it was time to be announced; please be upstanding for the new Mr and Mrs S! Eek! We had a beautiful dinner which I struggled to eat and H barely managed at all, and then it was time for the speeches. My Dad stood up, sounding more nervous than I’ve ever heard him, and welcomed H into the family. H stood up, and although nervous, gave a beautiful speech, it was so lovely! We gave out all of our presents which went down well, especially the Best Man’s personalised plectrum, and then I surprised my Nanna by giving her my bouquet. She cried, and I was so pleased I’d chosen to do it. Then it was the turn of the Best Man. I had been worried about his speech (he’s a bit of a lad) but he truly did us proud.

Dinner and speeches over, it was time for photos on the bandstand as the sun went down. I was set on having these all along, so I was so pleased the weather and the timing was right. We got some gorgeous shots, the photographer was chuffed when we’d finished!

    The evening

We headed back inside ready to cut the cake. I really was gorgeous, W had done us proud. Cake cut, the DJ announced our first dance. We did the whole thing on our own as the photographer was clicking away and no one wanted to interrupt, they’d forgotten that I’d said we wanted photos of them dancing too! They joined us for the next song, and then it was party time! We spent a lot of our evening apart, trying to chat to everyone, and in my case dance too. The buffet was put out but neither of us touched it, although apparently Mum encouraged everyone to eat! Guests started to say their goodbyes and then it was midnight, and our day was drawing to a close. We tottered upstairs to the enormous bridal suite, and as soon as got out of our outfits, we were asleep! We’d had the most amazing day, and we were both so happy.

    The days after

The following day we had breakfast and then we were going to my parent’s house for the after party! My brother played taxi, and we had a nice lunch with everyone out in the garden. Eventually everyone said their goodbyes and we got the chance to sit and open all our cards, which was lovely. Then it was off to Gatwick. We drove up and stayed in the hotel ready for our flight the next day. Monday we flew to Egypt. We are so glad we chose to go there, and so grateful to our guests for their gifts, as it meant we got the do the trips we wanted, we went to Luxor and Cairo, and saw, among other things, the valley of the kings and the pyramids. Incredible. The hotel was stunning, as was the weather, and we had the most wonderful holiday we could have had. Perfect!

Now we’re home, and we’re enjoying being man and wife. If you made it all the way through this, I’m impressed! It is seriously long and far too detailed, but once I started I wanted to write it all down! I hope I included enough flashes to keep you interested Smiley smile x
