Mum's/Grandma's Wedding Dress? *Now with a FLASH of my Grandma's dress!*

butterpopcorn, 2 April, 2012 at 21:48 Posted on Planning 0 13

Did anyone wear/ is anyone going to wear their Mum's or Grandma's wedding dress (or mother in law, aunt, or anyone else for that matter!). Did you/ are you wearing it as it was, or having changes made - minor or major?

My Mum just wore a plain white shift dress for her registry office wedding to my Dad in the 80s, so I had never really thought about family dresses. I haven't been dress shopping yet but the ones I've looked at online have been vintage-y, lacey - this is one I particularly like (that someone on here complemented!) -

My Grandma lives abroad and my Mum has just gone to visit her and she has just phoned me to say Grandma's 1950s strapless ivory lace wedding dress with short, light, long sleeved 'jacket' is perfect and she will bring it back for me if I want. Grandma was the same height as me when she got married too. I just have one photo of her wearing it, black and white and not very clear. It's been in storage so I haven't seen it any time I've visited - its because I'm now engaged she's got it out.

I think it would be lovely to wear it, but only if the dress itself is right, not just for the sake of it if you see what I mean. It's unlikely my Grandma will make it to the wedding - as I say she's abroad and is not up to the journey so it would be special for her too. She has said to my Mum I could use "all or some" of the dress, which I take to mean I could have some pretty major alterations made to get it how I would like.

Any experiences/thoughts anyone?

I think if the dress is right for you then go for it. So many dresses only get worn once and I think it's a really nice idea to wear a family dress or have it re-done. I'm sure your Grandma will be delighted if it's right for you but you'll need to get a good recommendation for somewhere to clean the dress.

I tried my mum's lace dress but it was too small for me and my aunt offered me her satin dress (which was originally my great aunt's dress) but it would have needed a lot of updating. I considered having some sort of combination of the two dresses made together but in the end I just bought one as the colours weren't quite right together.

I'm planning on wearing my mum's veil though.

Depends on the style and condition can you post the picture you have?

Ok, here's picture I have of the dress. It has the little lace 'jacket' over it with the long sleeves and the little ccollar, and underneath it is strapless.

I think you should wait and see the condition of it and try it on and then decide

The dress looks so lovely. I think if it's what you're after and is in good condition, perfect fit etc. then you should go for it!

I love the vintage style dresses, mine is lacey and vintage style, my mum still has hers, and is off that style...but not to my taste, and she was a size 10, and had just had my sister 1 month before!!!

My grandma has given me her veil to wear, which my great great grandmother also wore for her wedding. It's 150 years old so that will count as my something old! When my Mum mentioned it to me I was really hoping I would like it because I love the idea of wearing it. I saw it on Sunday and luckily it's beautiful, but I don't have a dress yet so I suppose I'll be matching my dress to my veil.

    Haha Lanny that is brilliant!

Butterpopcorn that dress is so similar to my Mum's wedding dress except my Mum's is long, she got married in 1958. Unfortunately my Mum's dress is just not my style, I'm not a very vintage-y looking person. Plus although I'm slim my mum was like a rake with a minuscule waist, the last time I fit into her dress I was 13 ? I think if it's something you want to do you could definitely get it customised to make it yours.

I would see what the dress / jacket is like, if you don't like the dress but like the jacket you could wear that over your new dress. I think you would have to see it and try it.

It is a lovely idea though, my mum gave me here leave design crown years ago and I got it out but just doesn't go with my dress (which she agreas on) otherwise I would have used it.
