Name Change & dvla

Emma, 25 August, 2023 at 09:34 Posted on Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Hello, I know this has been asked previously, however it seemed to be some time ago and I am hoping people have more recent experience of this.

I am ready to send my driving licence and D1 change of name form to the DVLA (along with marriage cert). I want to put in a return stamp addressed envelope to myself and would like to make it signed for or tracked so it comes back safely. The post office have a disclaimer saying it needs to be sent within 7 days, problem being its going to be sent back by the DVLA and they currently have a 3 week turn around period.

Has anybody used recorded or special delivery and had any problems using it?

I am just wondering what people have done in the past, I don't want my marriage certificate to go astray..

Thanks in advance x

You can get a statutory declaration from a solicitor if you don't want to send your original marriage certificate. I'm not sure I'd trust the DVLA with mine. When I originally sent in a change of name, I sent a solicitor certified copy (we hadn't realised the DVLA won't accept these, as literally everyone else accepts them, and a stat dec from a solicitor is basically just confirming that they've seen your marriage cert. which is exactly what a certified copy from a solicitor does, so it's bizarre they will accept one and not the other!) which was returned to me after 3 months, covered in coffee stains!!! I didn't want that happening to my original certificate!

I didn't include a return envelope with mine and my certificate came back pristine after a week. I had bought multiples from the registrar just in case so it wouldn't have been a problem if it never came back or came back damaged.

You may need to balance the cost of special delivery with the risk it may take longer than a week and not be used, vs £11 to order a new one if it returns damaged.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I did get two copies from the day but still want to send it off safely. Solicitor may be an option. It all seems such a faff and costly! Thanks again 😁

My husband sent his off after the wedding, with a certified copy of the certificate, we bought a spare certificate when we got married, as the £11 seemed worth it. The new driving licence came back 2.5 weeks later, and the certificate in a separate envelope was a couple of days after that. We just let the DVLA post it back to us, save on postage fees, and as Hayley mentioned it’s only £11 if they do lose it to get a new one.

I've just done mine. Used normal post. The new licence came back after 2 weeks and the marriage certificate was sent separately a few days later.

I’m in the same situation right now. Did you end up using recorded or special delivery? Curious to know which worked better for you.

I went through a name change recently as well. Once you have the legal document, updating the DVLA is quite straightforward, but it does take a bit of time. Make sure all your details match to avoid delays.

If you’ve changed your name, you need to update the DVLA so your driving licence and vehicle records match. You’ll usually need to send proof of name change (e.g. deed poll or marriage certificate). It’s important to do this to avoid issues with identification or fines.

An important administrative step where Name changes must be properly reported to the DVLA to keep documents accurate and legally valid.

Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t realize how important it is to make sure all documents match when changing your name with the DVLA.

Clear and practical information . The part about which documents the DVLA accepts was especially useful for anyone going through a name change.
