Non-religious wedding readings/poems

KateSF, 28 August, 2011 at 20:41 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi ladies,

The H2B and I are having a civil ceremony, and so looking for poems/readings ideas for the ceremony. I love Edward Monkton's A Lovely Love Story for one of the readings/poems, but I know that as it's a bit quirky/different, both my parents and H2B's mum will hate it. With that in mind, it would be good to have a slightly more 'traditional' reading too, but non-religious. Whilst my parents are both only-go-to-church-for-wedding-or-funeral people, they are still pretty sh***y about the fact that I'm not getting married in a church (but that's a whole new thread in itself!)

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance xxx

I love A Lovely Love Story but OH thinks it's weird ☹️ so we're having:

Captain Corelli's Mandolin (Louis De Bernieres)

    Union (Robert Fulghum)

Oooh I like this one! OH thought A lovely story was odd too and pretty much turned his nose up at all the others I've showed him (too soppy) but I think this one might work!! So thanks for pointing it out x

We're also having the one from Captain Corelli and Union. They made my mam cry and didn't make my OH vomit so they must be the best ones for us!

Oh my goodness, Union is so lovely - beautiful but without the vomit-inducing factor! I think that's gotta go on the list - thanks ladies! Thankfully, H2B loves A Lovely Love Story as it's a bit odd - my mother will turn her nose up about a poem that involves a dinosaur, but who cares - we like it! xx

Have you considered the Apache wedding blessing, rather sweet without being sickening if you know what I mean.

Now you will feel no rain
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now each of you will feel no cold
For each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no loneliness for you
For each of you will be companion to the other.
    Now you are two persons
But there is one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place to enter into the days of your togetherness
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.

We have decided that we would like one of our readings to be funny and we have managed to whittle it down to:

Yes I'll Marry You, by Pam Ayres
Yes, I'll marry you, my dear,
    And here's the reason why;
So I can push you out of bed
When the baby starts to cry,
And if we hear a knocking
And it's creepy and it's late,
I hand you the torch you see,
    And you investigate.

Yes I'll marry you, my dear,
    You may not apprehend it,
    But when the tumble-drier goes
It's you that has to mend it,
You have to face the neighbour
    Should our labrador attack him,
And if a drunkard fondles me
It's you that has to whack him.

    Yes, I'll marry you,
    You're virile and you're lean,
My house is like a pigsty
You can help to keep it clean.
    That sexy little dinner
    Which you served by candlelight,
    As I do chipolatas,
You can cook it every night!

It's you who has to work the drill
    and put up curtain track,
And when I've got PMT it's you who gets the flak,
    I do see great advantages,
But none of them for you,
And so before you see the light,
    I do, I do, I do!

    OR

Love me when I'm old and shocking
    Peel off my elastic stockings
    Swing me from the chandeliers
Let's be randy bad old dears

Push around my chromed Bath Chair
Let me tease your white chest hair
    Scaring children, swapping dentures
Let us have some great adventures

Take me to the Dogs and Bingo
Teach me how to speak the lingo
Bone my eels and bring me tea
Show me how it's meant to be

Take me to your special places
    Watching all the puzzled faces
You in shorts and socks and sandals
Me with warts and huge love-handles

As the need for love enthrals
    Wrestle with my dampproof smalls
    Make me laugh without constraint
    Buy me chocolate body paint

Hold me safe throughout the night
When my hair has turned to white
Believe me when I say it's true
I've waited all my life for you.

I can't remember whom the second one is by.
