There is no proof that unicorns and fairies don't exist (they might be shy and keep themselves hidden using magic), but I don't believe in those either.

But to me that's like saying I can produce kittens out of my left eye socket. I'm not going to show you how, you just have to believe me because someone wrote it down. Why would you? I don't have all the answers AJ, no one does, but just dismissing scientific evidence and saying "god did it" is not the way I would like to live. I cannot say "there is no god" i can just say I have never come across any evidence to make me believe there is and for that reason I do not believe and will not live in fear of an imaginary being and what he or she might or might not do to me when I die. To me it's a tragic waste of precious life.

You are entitled to believe what you want.

Oh.. wow.. how did this thread spiral into the realms of a religion debate?

(FWIW, I am an Atheist but have no qualms with religious people unless they try to kung-fu me with their beliefs and ethics.. then I get all kick-ass on them )

I don't feel that I am "missing out" on anything in life by choosing to live life the way I do, based on what I believe, therefore I don't see it as a waste of anything.

If you assume that God created us, and the Bible is the "manufacturer's instruction manual" then does it not logically follow that God knows what's best for us and how we should lead our lives?

Not that anyone's asked, but I have not been 'brainwashed from birth' as a Christian; having investigated it in depth in my early 20's I came to accept it through my own free will by choice.

    Wowzers;

I dont have any religion, Im not an athiest as I belive there is some sort of higher power but I dont follow any religion per se.

I was always fo the opinion that if people believe in God/Allah/Budda/Jedi Knights thats up to them, as long as you dont knock on the front door whilst im trying to watch Hollyoaks just to tell me my life sucks and I really should jump on thier bandwagon I really dont mind.

If people want to believe god made the earth in 7 days- good luck to 'em! What harm is it doing to me? None?!

KV I am both horrified and upset by your posts. First you tell me my toys don't move of their own free will, now you're telling me about unicorns and fairies. Next thing you'll tell me the Tooth Fairy was actually my Mum. Fantasist.

Have you never read Harry Potter? its clear that the ministry of magic are covering these things up. Its only a matter of time till i track a real unicorn down now you know. I intend to ride one to the wedding...

One of my favourite quotes is:

"Isn't it enough to see a garden is beautiful without having to believe there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" Douglas Adams

They had a stall at the Wedding Show at the NEC. I got some leaflets to give to my horse-mad neighbour and she actually briefly considered having them. Thankfully, she didn't go through with the idea.

Can you imagine if the unicorn did a shart on your dress?!

I don't believe I did waste my time. My aim was to prevent others from believing a nonsensical explanation as true rather than to try and convert you, that is a journey for you to take if you so choose. I simply wanted a more factual explanation of origins and evolution for the benefit of others who may not have looked into it or made up their minds.

Ah.. the old 'it's only a theory' argument, how droll. I suppose you don't believe in the theory of gravity either?

Definition of a scientific theory is quite different to the everyday 'i have a theory about why John Smith fancies so and so':

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory

It seems I have caused this thread to spiral into a religion debate, apologies to the OP and to you AJ for that, I tried to stay away from theistic beliefs in my post as much as possible, some even find theism and evolution can work together. I don't want to pollute this thread any more than I've already managed to. I relish a good debate about this sort of thing (yes everyone, you guessed, I'm a terrible dinner party guest), I just think it's for another place/time.

Please feel free to believe what you want (as a former 'saved' (not from birth and my choice) I would enjoy a good debate with you about that side of things too), it's your right as others have said and I'll defend that right 'til the cows come home. I merely wanted to correct the inaccuracies in your origins statement.

''times change - move on!'' has always a favourite quote of mine and i believe it should be used here.

to the OP - dont worry, it sounds like you were pretty well protected. i may have to consider the MAP if your still within the time-frame.

To late for morning after pill now.....I would be disappointed at having to move wedding date, but if it gets through two forms of contraception i guess it's fate eh?! We shall see in a weeks time when i can do a test. At the back of my mind in the logical part of my brain, I know it is highly unlikely for both to fail, but its cos i'm at the 9 month countdown to the wedding, it would be a disaster.....wouldnt mind being pregnant, i would mind not fitting into my beautiful dress tho! x

    Wow! 7 pages!

I thought I would like to add my take on the religion matter. I don't like it when it is thrust in my face (knock on my door at your peril), I don't know if I believe or not, science seems to make sense to me, although OH's family are religious (his gramps was a vicar). I find it amazing and quite indeering that people can take so much faith from something like their religion. I don't have that kind of faith in anything.

Had to say my sister is catholic through and through even says "Me and the old man upstairs have had words after all my bad look" .. I find myself staring at the ceiling thinking she has an old man upstairs! (imagining a white bearded wrinkly in her cuboard) ... anyhoo and I dont have any faith ... was rasied catholic lost it a long long time ago but I agree with the other poster..

"I have lived a good life, law abiding, kind, giving" and should he exist im sure it will be more than enough!

My nan's opinion (very religous) would be... I'd rarther you werent, but as long as your happy! Smiley laugh

    I have two points:

    1) I think religion and science can go hand in hand

    2) I don't think the comments about how some people look down on pregnant brides really helps the OP and if anything would make her feel bad.

To the OP - I'm 9 months to go and have had exactly the same thoughts and "what if?" ?

To the OP: Get a test, just to be sure. Might put your mind at rest.

Debate: AJ, was only saying that some people find a pregnant bride shameful. I am pretty sure that some people do. (in all fairness I am pretty sure some people believe they have been abducted by aliens and probed too)

I believe they may well be a higher power but I also believe in science and physics. For me it is religion that has it wrong, not science or faith in a higher power. All religions take their teaching from texts wrote thousands of years ago, these texts are outdated and simply not relevant. How can a human being who has no concept of DNA explain evolution and how this fits in with a greater plan? It is frustrating that these books are edited over the years as there are updated for modern times but fail to embrace new sciences. The more books I read about evolution, the universe and physics the more I am convinced that the universe is a million times more remarkable than religions would have you believe. In my opinion the religions of the world do their deity a disservice.

I know that AJ has said that it is an opinion, rather than his opinion, but I still don't get how he thought it would be useful for the OP!
