Registry Office Wedding - top tips/rest of day?

Anonbride, 1 August, 2022 at 12:23 Posted on Planning 1 13

We've decided to have a small registry office wedding/legal ceremony the week before our big day (long story short: to enable my friend to be our officiant and create a really personal ceremony for the main event).

We like the look of Old Marylebone Town Hall, as they have some small rooms that would enable us to have either 4 or 6 guests each without it feeling empty. My gut thought is to go for a late morning ceremony and then go out for lunch somewhere...

I've had some personal ideas (e.g. for this one my mum will walk me down the tiny aisle, I'll wear a white dress but not my wedding dress so that's still a surprise, and we'll use our 'almost went for' entry and exit music so it feels different rather than a duplicate) but I don't feel very on it with the logistics or anything! I've found the websites for registry offices super sparse and you don't even phone up or go in you can literally book a ceremony time online... which, while convenient makes me a bit nervous about pushing the button!

Has anyone done a similar thing? Anything I should be considering?

Ours was a registry service but in a licensed venue. Surrey Registrations were really good and responsive by email but it was all done online except the giving notice in person a few weeks before. They sent a wedding checklist link by email where we had to go online and personalise the service, so we uploaded a reading and the name of who would read it, we provided two songs for entrance and exit plus background tracks, names of witnesses, there were questions such as will there be rings, how do you want to be announced, will you share a kiss etc. Once we had completed it online they emailed a copy of it to us and kept the other on their files. Plus they gave you a choice of three different wedding scripts. I felt like it all worked well on the day but there was no communication with them other than emails.

We’re doing something similar for the exact same reason. We picked York (live in Leeds) because it’s much nicer. This might be a bit too simple for you, but we’ve picked the option of having 2 witnesses (our mums) in what is essentially an office- so no walking down the aisle/readings etc. We’re then going to lunch with our parents after. I plan on wearing a nice dress and FH a smart/casual suit. We felt it was the best way to not steal focus from the real day on Saturday and not having to pick additional guests. Plus it’s loads cheaper!

That's exactly what we are doing. Statutory ceremony with OHs parents as witnesses then a nice country pub for afternoon tea on the way home. I believe it was £67.

Yeah exactly our plans! I think it was about £47. They do a ‘special’ every Tuesday. I just really wanted the focus to be on the Saturday, as that’s where all the money is going 😂

Wowwww that's so cheap!!! We're definitely looking at in the £100s because it needs to be a Saturday as FH's parents desperately want to be there and need it to be on a weekend

That’s so cheap I agree! Is that for the legal ceremony in a council owned building then ? Some of the buildings are nicer than others too. Our local registry office is a lovely old house. But we wanted everything in one place and a reception on site afterwards. Our legal ceremony conducted by registrars in a licensed venue was £646!!!!! That’s is Surrey though lol 😂

Oh so glad you've shared that price - makes me feel so much better about ours being £800 odd in London!!

It’s in York Registry. The building itself is pretty but the room we’ll be married in is literally an office, though they have lovely rooms for about £500+. For us it is just the legal part so we weren’t too fussed. Plus we have no friends or family near us that could come to essentially 2 ceremonies. Hope you enjoy your day!
