Shapewear under dress

Catherine, 26 June, 2022 at 22:27 Posted on Wedding Attire 1 15

This is my first post on Hitched. Genuinely have no idea what people do about this... Do most brides wear shape wear to cinch in waist/bum or do people generally let the dress pull them in? Huge nude shape wear seems deeply unsexy for the moment of the dress removal with my husband (and uncomfortable as evening moves on with eating/drinking), but would be good for a smooth silhouette for the photos. Any thoughts welcome on if there is any comfy/sexy shape-wear (I am thinking SKIMS as an option), or if people generally don't bother. at all Thanks

Usually brides wear their shape wear for the wedding, photos etc. then when they get back to their room in the evening change into wedding lingerie.

Also I’ve seen some nice shape wear on Amazon x

Depends on lots of things- dress type, your relationship with the FH, self confidence. I’m not wearing any shape wear as I’m a 45 year mum of two wearing a tea length fifties style dress so not fitted on the bottom half plus he’s seen it all and loves me for what I am! In fact I’m not even wearing a bra as my dress is quite structured in the bodice and i don’t have big boobs. I can see the advantages of shape wear if you are wearing a very fitted sheath type dress but that’s just not me anyway.
I did use M&S control knickers in another life and they worked well and were comfortable! They also have good control shapewear as well but o agree it doesn’t feel sexy for the wedding night. Lots of my mates have said they just fell asleep on the wedding night anyway as too knackered!

My concern about shapewear is struggling with it when going to the toilet. I have some high waisted shorts but I'm not sure whether I will be able to pull them back up again as my bodice is boned and fitted. I'm going to take them with me to my dress alterations appointment and see what works then. I'm hoping to get away without a bra.

Could you get an opinion from your seamstress as to whether you need anything?

Hi, I didn't wear shapewear for mine, but I had a ballgown style dress, so I was cinched at the waist from my lace up corset/boning. I also didn't wear a bra due to the boning and built in cups in corset. I did wear tights though, because I generally don't like to wear heels without tights and also as it was a hot day, didn't want chafing in the thighs lol! I also had an evening dress for my Reception.

I also agree with above and depends on your dress and how comfortable you are. I'm average build with a tummy/muffin top, so if I had a more fitted dress, I would definitely wear shapewear - mostly for my photos, but also partly to look good for my husband. Then once I change into my evening dress, I would remove my shapewear. I didn't bother with wedding lingerie, cos thought we'd be absolutely knackered at the end of the night lol.

See how you feel nearer to your final dress fitting and go from there :-)

I’ll be wearing shape wear for mine as I’m not too confident with my body when photographs will be taken but our wedding won’t be all day so will be getting changed after photos anyway so it doesn’t matter if it’s uncomfortable! But SKIMS are a good idea if you want something a bit more comfy, I’m moving towards M&S firm control but some people have said it didn’t work for them?

Thank you so much for all the replies! Having read this I am going to go for shapewear during the day so I feel confident I have clean lines on the dress, and will look for the type with poppers on the gusset to help with bathroom visits. I am skipping a bra as the dress should hold me in. As people say....we will probs be so knackered by the PM likely to fall asleep! Going to buy nicer underwear to use for the wedding night, or the honeymoon. Really helpful to get other brides' opinions...so hard to know what is helpful and practical behind staged/glossy Instagram photos you see!

Do what makes you feel comfortable.

I'd probably have a backup plan for your wedding night though, as you may find that after a long day's partying, your wedding dress undies aren't very fresh any more. Smiley laugh

The main idea with shape-wear is to remove lines (vpl etc), rather than to cinch you in.

I remember one of the ladies I used to work with would always tell brides to ‘leave the pretty/sexy lingerie for the honeymoon as most grooms won’t be in a fit state to appreciate it’. I have to say that both times I’ve been bridesmaid the grooms haven’t even been the ones to help the bride out of her dress, it’s always been down to the bridesmaids.
The thing is though, there really is no right or wrong as long as you do what works for you.

Ha yes good point! I have helped friends in and out of dresses....Yes for the original dress I had planned for the hole day (Ghost) it was very form-fitting and needed clean, smooth lines. Now I have a ballgown dress so not clinging to be body, but am still thinking about an evening change to something slinkier and will still need shapewear. Basically I am being practical now and going shapewear!
