Should i wear a veil?

Kirsty, 20 February, 2023 at 21:20 Posted on Wedding Attire 0 28
Hi, hoping any of you ladies can help me make a decision. I am getting married 1st July 2023! I’ve bought my dress from a bridal boutique on sample sale. I hadn’t considered wearing a veil before now. I got my dress for a great price so don’t want to spend a lot on veil. So veil or no veil? What do we think? Should i wear a veil? 1

“Veil or no veil?” is a question most modern-day brides might be asked. However, decades ago, it was a no brainer that a bride would wear a veil. It has long been a tradition embedded in a myriad of different cultures and societies all around the world. While veils are an undeniably beautiful aspect of wedding day attire, their purpose was for far more than appearance. In fact, the whole wedding veil meaning and history is fascinating. A veil symbolized virginity, and the act of “unveiling” the bride, or having the father lift the veil and present his daughter to the groom, was symbolically meant to represent the allowance of her to essentially no longer be a virgin. Kind of crazy when you think of it in modern terms, right?

I got a veil on eBay for literally £3.50 just to see how I liked the dress with it, then bought a slightly pricier one for the actual day once I decided I liked the look and the length

Personally, I would go no veil as I think it would distract from your lovely dress, but I'm not a fan of veils generally and hardly ever think they add anything to the look. Plus I hate having anything on my head or in front of my face like that.

You said you'd never thought of wearing one, so what has made you start thinking about changing your mind? If it's pressure from others, then just ignore them. But if you just like the idea, then ask the boutique if you can try on a few with your dress to see how you feel - you don't have to buy one from them, but it might give you an idea if a veil would be something you would be happy wearing.

Yeah it is crazy to think of the tradition in modern terms. It definitely wouldn’t work for me, we’ve been together almost 13 years and have two children together haha.

Thank you very much. I think it’s just when I’m browsing through images of weddings and brides I see a lot wearing a veil rather than not. That’s a good idea to ask the boutique if I can try on and see what I think then. I do love my dress and plan to have my hair down so maybe I just don’t need it. Thanks for reply

You'll usually see brides in photoshoots wearing veils because a) it's traditional and b) it can make for some fun photography shots. And you may get some pushback from older friends and relatives if you don't wear one - I had a couple of horrorstruck ladies in their 80s at our wedding who are dubious that I was properly married because I wasn't wearing a veil Smiley laugh Because EVERYONE wore one back in their day. But it's much more common to go without one now, and it's really down to personal preference.

Thank you very much. I think I won’t bother with a veil in the end. I’m hoping once I’ve had my hair/makeup trial I will know more what the style and look will be over all.

Oh no I’m sorry to hear that. Family drama is a nightmare but such a shame that it’s resulted in you postponing. I just haven’t invited family that I think will cause drama. Where are you getting married?

With regard to the origins of the veil I would say about 70% of my brides do not wear it over their face and that is Church weddings and I cannot remember a bride at a civil ceremony ever wearing it over their face.

And has been mentioned they can look good on a photo but then you don't have to have it in your hair all day and most actually don't.

What venue would it be in cardigan ? They want us to pay for their solicitors fees for a licence to occupy for 3 days it’s just frustrating as all the way through they’ve said they don’t want us to pay them anything but they’ve been hard work and reluctant to give us permission to erect the tipis up on their land in the first place. It’s right at the back of the hall so we assumed it was part of the village hall but then it all got complicated as the hall trustees wanted us to get permission in writing for use of the land. They assumed it was the council and then it turned out to be privately owned. Michael my fiancé did a great job in contacting the owners etc it’s just been a long drawn out process and in hindsight it we knew all this we wouldn’t of gone through with it all. Sorry for ranting x

Your dress is stunning, such a great choice Smiley smile I currently have the same decision to make and it's not an easy one! In my opinion, as your dress has a stunning train and back detail the veil would take the emphasis away from that. So I'd say no veil. Maybe some lovely hair accessories instead, depending if you're having your hair up, or a subtle headband if down? Whichever you choose you'll look amazing. Enjoy your day xx

Hi Natalie, aww thank you very much. What is your wedding dress like? I’m pretty sure I’m going to go without a veil now. Like you say it’s just not needed and may take away from my dress. I’m thinking half up half down with waves and plaits with gypsophila in my hair. Thank you again. Where is your wedding venue? X

Your hair will look lovely and compliment the dress beautifully. We're getting married at South Lodge in West Sussex in August 2024, such a long time to wait but so much to do in the meantime! I haven't bought my dress yet but I'm very close to choosing Ryder by Made With Love, I'm going to a trunk show in a few weeks time to try on more of their dresses so i could change my mind very easily! Although I don't want the dress shopping to end, its been so much fun! What's your chosen venue? X

Yeah it is for the sake of a bit of land. It doesn’t affect them. Never mind. We’ve been fortunate with our family contributing financially. Oh that sounds so lovely I’ll have to have a nosey online x

Aww thank you. My fiancés cousin is my hair and make up artist and she is so good and the only person I would ask so I’m sure I will be happy with what she transforms me into for the day haha. Oh sounds lovely I bet you can’t wait. Yes enjoy the planning as much as you can. I can’t believe we only have 5 months left! So we are getting married at our local church and then the reception we have hired two giant hat tipis to be put up on a field behind our local village hall. X
