So how many Scottish Hitchers are having steak pie tomorrow then?

Roobarb, 31 December, 2008 at 12:29 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 32

I went to the butcher's at 8.30 this morning (cos if you wait till late in the day on Hogmanay the queues are right out the door!) for ours and there was already a queue, and gazillions of steak pies and they were making more up, and I just know at the end of the day they'll all be gone!

I just thought, I bet if you go into almost every dining room in our town tomorrow, there will be steak pie on the table ? and it's probably a scene repeated across Scotland.

Why is steak pie traditional New Year fare here anyway? I've never fathomed it out! Nice and tasty though ?

We're not. We were going to but I have put off restarting my diet too many times already over the festive period. The more I think about them though, the more tempted I am to go back out and get one.

I was in town today and there were people with them everywhere!! M+S had hundreds of them.

We can't get it here and I don't have time to make one ☹️ even if I could find the ingredients.

This is the first Hogmanay that I haven't spent in Scotland and I'm not looking forward to it. Apparently the thing to do at Hogmanay here is to go into the streets and throw fireworks - I'm staying in...

Our fridges at work are rammed full of steak pies that everyone picked up at 9am this morning ?

We'll be away in the caravan so will be having a takeaway of some sort (If they're open?). We're having stovies and oatcakes tonight though!

Not this year, as we did the whole steak pie dinner thing with H's gran just before Christmas.

I love that Dorothy Paul sketch where she talks about her childhood and her parents warning her and her bro to decline the steak pie, as there wasn't enough to go round all the visitors, which they duly did only to be told they weren't allowed any pudding because they never ate their steak pie ?

Yep, there is a steak pie sitting in my fridge ready for tomorrow ? and there were queues out of all the butchers earlier on. And my friend is just off the phone complaining about the length of the queue to pick up their pre-ordered steak pie ?

I need to go and steep the dried peas though, so they are ready to cook tomorrow (should take until dinner time to be cooked ?)

My mum always reminisces about Hogmanays of yore, and invariable waxes lyrical about how they weren't allowed anything to eat for most of the day on Hogmanay, until all the first footing was done and then they went upstairs to my great gran (who lived in the same close) and had a steak pie dinner after the bells! Can you imagine tucking into steak pie and all the trimmings at 1 in the morning or whatever ?

I'd no idea it was such a tradition! [thick icon] I must have been living in a bag not to have noticed ?

So no, no steak pie here. I think it's risotto on the menu, yum.

    ? Guilty as served!

I had to queue at the butchers but everyone was buying turkey (?) so I managed to get beef steak without any problem.

I think it's a lovely tradition and have brought it south with me. The in-laws look forward to their broth followed by steak pie every second new years day when we're here. ?

Well, looks like I won't be having steak pie after all! My mum just phoned, my sister had been planning to go away tomorrow to their caravan but due to family circumstances can't go till the weekend, and she has no food in as they were going to go out, so I've invited them over here, so it'll be steak pie for my mum, dad, H and BIL, and I'll make spag bol for me my sister and the children! ?

This is very odd. I come from a large Scottish family on both sides (Glasgow, Ayrshire), with members from all walks of life, and have never heard of steak pie on Hogmanay. We used to have madeira cake, shortbread and black bun after the bells.

We will be having steak pie tomorrow (2nd) as I have bought in a large roast for today and wil make pie with the leftovers.

I *think* the steak pie tradition comes from the fact it was an easy to prepare meal (didn't need fires lit early in the morning) that was filling (after cold night with lots of booze) and could feed lots of extra people (first footers).

My mum always did a roast on new years so i am following that tradition instead. Although I am fairly sure she did steak pie on boxing day when we were little.

Anyway - a happy new year to you all...whatever you are having for dinner!

Aye - we're headin down to Fife for our steak pie. It was gonna be a buffet but we protested and its back to the traditional steak pie! ?

Big family 'do' so have to suffer the in-laws and H's crazy family, but it is well worth it for the home made steak pie ?

Was anyone mad enough to do the Loonny Dook this morning? ?

Happy new year to you all! ?

What's a Loony Dook? (H is asleep so I can't ask him) Is it something to do with swimming? In a cold place?

The survivours all meet up on the seafront just before dusk with whiskey macs and hot sausage rolls and H always wears his kilt which gives the Brighton ladies a thrill. He's also the warmest there on account of having 2 miles of wool wrapped round him.

We're not having steak pie this year. Having a chicken breast in a sauce instead. Non traditional I know, but we have steak pie all through the year and are getting a bit sick of it tbh.

I won't (don't eat beef and my H cooked steak last night) but my Dad does, he usually makes it himself though. He's great with pasty, my Dad ?

I read this thread last night and remembered I had a steak pie in the freezer, lovely one from Tarelgin and had to have it even though I had a steak pie on Monday!

Have any hitchers had a Dalduff steak pie? I don't think they can be beaten!?

We had ours yesterday as I was driving south today but Mum's given me a small one of my own to take away. Hurrah!

It was never the tradition to make your own when my mum was a lass. Everyone used to take their pie dishes to the butcher's a few days before NYE and collect the pie at Hogmanay so that's what we did. Lindsay's in Perth was doing a roaring trade yesterday with the queue out of the shop and down the road. Well worth the wait though. ?

Mmm, ours is in the oven after a shockingly late start to the day! My Glasgow gran always used to get her steak pie from John Barr's* in Lanarkshire, which is probably why I have been making my own for the past ten years (*for anyone that remembers that little episode)

It's been a while since I've had steak pie for New Year's since moving to Aberdeen (been working or suffering too much from the Mulled Wine the night before) but having an Oliphants (the baker for Linlithgow) steak pie tomorrow when we go to my mum's. Hopefully my sister can get some more for me to bring home and I can whack in the freezer..
