Suggestions for light hearted/funny reading material (poss sens)

Dove, 4 August, 2009 at 23:41 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

A friend as been told that she needs chemo and has asked friends to send her funny articles that she can read when she needs cheering up. Does anyone have suggestions for light hearted/funny reading material. I guess books need to be easily dipped in and out of. I was also thinking of audio material but I'm not sure what sort of comics are to her taste.

Any suggestions greatly received.

Thats sad news that your friend is going to be going through chemo...

I can't really help with articles but what about some Marian Keyes short stories? Her stuff is funny as anything and a very easy read... think she has done 2 short story collections, believe they are called 'Under the Duvet' or similar... also I'm very into Carl HIaasen at the moment, he is crime writer but very funny too...

Perhaps some of the 'travel size' glossy mags too -big ones are harder to read in bed I find.

    Laura.

Bill Bryson - Notes from a Big Country. Very dip-in-and-outable, it's a collection of newspaper columns (shhh, from the mail on sunday) but very, very funy. It was the first Bill Bryson I read, and I really enjoyed (so much I read the rest).

I thought The Timewaster Letters http://www.amazon.co.uk/Timewaster-Letters-Robin-Cooper/dp/1843171694/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1249465069&sr=1-4 was very funny, and easily to dip in and out of.

    I love Lucy Mangan.

    Both very dip-into-able.

Agree with Bill Bryson too. Also how about Tony Hawks?

Thanks for some great suggestions, will have a look at those.

I have read most of the Bill Bryson books and find them very 'laugh out loud' material - thanks for reminding me.

Anything by Clive James - his Unreliable Memoirs are hilarious and you can dip in and out. For something a bit longer Mil Millington's Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About is very funny indeed.
