Hi all

I hope you dont mind me posting my experience of this awful venue. We have had a long struggle through courts to get our money back and have had 9 months of sleepless nights because of it, but we have finally come out the other end and it is my mission to warn other brides of this truely horrendous wedding venue.

Here goes ....

Our nightmare with the Blazing Donkey began last year (2009). It looked like a lovely venue for our wedding and we received a very persuasive sales pitch from the manager/owner (Mr Martin).

We paid a massive £4950 over the phone for our weekday wedding for 2010 (we were told the only way we could secure the supposed 'discount' was to pay within 24 hours!!

We did not receive a receipt of confirmation of booking and we spent nearly 3 months chasing for this. All emails and phone calls were ignored.

Finally, we received an email from the wedding coordinator to tell us they didnt know who we were, when we had booked for etc etc - they had no record of us on file.

We lost all confidence in the venue and requested to cancel.

We were told the owner was unavailable but when we turned up at the venue, he was there - he denied all knowledge of my emails and phone calls and said that he had sent our confirmation by post (a lie as he did not have our address). We handed him a letter requesting return of our money. We received lots of support from trading standards, consumer direct and from on here!

Two more letters later (and four weeks later) he did not reply. After a fourth, we received an email to say we would not be getting our money back unless he sold the date on.

We then started court proceedings in the small claims court for the return of our money - again, he did not respond. We won the case by default but after 3 more weeks, he still he did not pay up. We instructed bailiffs to get our money back and once he received his bailiff papers he wrote to court to say he had not received the court papers (he said we had put the wrong address on the papers - same address as he advertises on his website though).

A court date was then set for his hearing, he did not turn up, we did and again, we won by default. He still refused to pay and finally after 9 months, the bailiffs went back in and got the money for us.

The Blazing Donkey reviews on trip advisor are horrendous and I know of many people who have been taken in by this venue and have lost their money. I am not the first and will not be the last to be taken in by the Blazing Donkey. They have ruined our wedding, we should be getting married in less than 2 months, instead we have only just got our money back and we have no wedding to look forward to.
Please do not make the same mistake that we did and book your wedding here.

Exactly this! I would have had no idea about this venue if it wasn't for the absolute genius of Kelly/Richard bumping up the thread. Very clever...not! ?

    Wow Kelly,

I was surprised to have this thread dragged up after two years.

Lucky you for having a nice wedding, you must be a minority as I have since heard plenty of bad reviews and more court appearances. Hey ho though, if people wish to take that chance then it is up to them. I wouldn't risk my money on such a place EVER again. If you do not believe it is the same place, I still have all the court papers and bailiffs papers to prove it - you would be more than welcome to have a look.

As for moving on, we have thank you. My other half has used the compensation he got from the MOD after losing his leg wisely rather than letting the blazing donkey take it and rip us off and we are doing really well. I will however, never forgive the blazing donkey for what they put us through and the fact that Richard Martin (manager of the blazing donkey) never apologised for his behaviour, is unforgivable. We have gone through a lot as a couple but after what we have been through together, this had a long lasting effect.

Thanks however for bumping this thread back up so more people realise what this venue is really capable of, much appreciated. Oh and by the way, I was contacted by the press to see if we wanted to publish our story and turned it down .... maybe your post is the impetus I need to actually do it. Smiley smile

I was quite confused when a message popped into my emails to say this thread had been commented on!!! I tried to resist the temptation to reply but couldn't resist!!! Not been on here for years, might start making a reappearance though as we start planning our wedding at a new venue. ?

I should imagine that the person who bounced this thread is now regretting doing so! Is great publicity for a wedding venue!

OOOOO, how interesting.... just done a bit of investigating and just found an old thread I did on MSE. There is a post on there from an ex employee - makes interesting reading. Thanks Kellywelly for reigniting my interest in this venue. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the welcome back ladies, its nice to be back.

As for the facebook account, yes I saw that a few months ago and commented to say I hope their business had improved since we got booked there .... funnily enough, they deleted the comment so the only people on there will be his friends and people who have been fortunate enough not to have had a wedding from hell. It's a shame the owner has never apologised or answered any of my questions as I really would have liked answers for the way we were treated.

Oh well, as I said before, I have moved on and I do wish anyone gets married there all the luck in the world as they really do need it. ?

Sorry to bounce this thread again (strayed over from BT - you didn't see me in here OK?!) but Blazing Donkey have been advertising all-in weddings on the Kent Groupon page recently so maybe that's why someone felt the need to say how wonderful the place now is?

Quick Google search and this thread pops up - thankfully. We were going to go and have a look...not now!

They've also been running an advertising campaign on my local radio station and are really pushing their all in package. It's a price that is too good to be true, which they've proven by the sounds of things.

Oh wow, what an horrendous situation for you. I have heard the adverts on the radio as it's a 'fairly' local venue to us. I had no idea they were so awful. I'm so sorry and will let anyone I know of the awful situation you've had. Good luck for the future, I hope you have a lovely wedding x

They're advertising for a new wedding coordinator - maybe they realise things have gone a bit to pot and are trying to rectify things? However, on the advert for the job it doesn't ask for any experience or anything - could this perhaps be why their weddings aren't the best?!

Oh, you poor thing, i feel so sorry for you, though if I'm honest I'm not surprised as we've stayed here before and had an awful experience - the owner is clearly a con man - when we stayed he brushed off any complaints we raised with pathetic excuses and the staff couldn't care less as we'd already paid for our accommodation.

I wouldn't stay there if you paid me, let alone get married there. Don't let it tar the whole wedding experience tho, as there are plenty of reputable suppliers out there to balance out the dishonest ones like the Blazing Donkey in Ham x

I have been reading all of these threads relating to the BD and I have been shocked as to peoples responses to this venue and Kelly who was merely providing an update of her own recent wedding experience.

I can only assume by using logic that the reason Kelly posted to the 2 year blog about the BD was because the thread comes up on the first page of google and quite rightly, as Kelly says, the issue the blogger had was back in 2009, it is now 2012. Whilst the blogger who took BD to the courts because of the problems she had, and quite rightly so, not everyone has experienced the same and this is what kelly was pointing out. From what I have read of BD weddings both on websites and from people who have be there as guests, and yes there are mixed reviews, there are many happy couples who have been pleased with their wedding experiences with BD.

Now before I get a backlash, as there seems to be a vendetta against the BD and it's owner, there are many other venues out there that have screwed couples over, been difficult in their dealings with couples so this is not the first and will not be the last.

I understand that the blogger has been through hell and back but please let's move on with this. Putting crude comments on Facebook and stalking BD and it's owner is not the way to go about things. You have made your point, it's on google for people to read and make their own judgement....

This thread has been bumped to the top. Is there any reason why? I am concerned for some friends that have booked for the summer of 2013.

The Lady hadn't commented on the post for nearly 2 years! and as you have commented on the FB comments which the posted never quoted it would seem you know first hand what they said!! People will make up their own minds but as you are either the owner or work there you are making it a lot worse I for one wouldn't book my wedding at your venue for your underhand responses to comments be honest about who you are and defend yourself as such!

No I don't work at the BD-again a typical immature response I had expected

The reason why I posted and joined hitched- a) because I am getting married next year b) because I am getting married next year and live in Kent I have been looking at venues in different parts of Kent- its called research c) the reason for my post is stated within in it
