Vegetarian wedding breakfast?

HatTrick, 7 September, 2009 at 15:37 Posted on Planning 0 15

I'm a vegetarian, my partner will eat meat but he's happy to eat vegetarian meals if I am cooking etc.

I'm in a slight dilemma as to what to have as the wedding breakfast. I don't want to start a vegetarianism debate as I understand it's a controversial topic. But, I feel it's against my morals to pay hundreds of pounds for meals containing meat. I understand it is entirely my guests choice what they eat, but I personally dont agree with it.

I suppose my question is... if you went to a wedding and were served a vegetarian meal would you feel a bit miffed? I also think with a good chef, a good meal may not be so apparently 'vegetarian'.

    Hi Moon pig

Im veggie too and so are a few of my guests. Personally I wouldnt mind being given a veggie meal...but I decided not to ask my guests to eat that way. Anyone who hasnt asked for a veggie meal at our wedding will get meat...H2B is a meat eater so had to give him what he wanted too......

So I guess it depends on how strongly you feel about it. I have a clear mind about my choice...but so many others dont feel that way.

Hoe you manage to come to a decision that makes everyone happy

I've been to a wedding with a vegetarian meal and it was really nice. It was Italian, so I don't think the meat eaters noticed, but I'm not sure as I don't eat meat myself. I just wouldn't make a big deal out of it and if it's something yummy I bet a lot of people don't even make the connection that they've had a specifically veggie meal. we are having a buffet and there will be some meat in it which is a bit annoying but my partner is inisting. I eat fish though, so i'm not actually vegetarian, and we are having some fish things and some vegetarian things.

I wouldnt mind at all - I love veggie food (as well as meat) - Its only 1 meal and I am sure most people will be fine with it ! - however my o/h would be wondering where the meat was to go with the 2 veg ( he he - being rude now ) but seriously I dont think he would be rude enough so say so especially if someone else was paying as he was a guest !

also my FIL2b would be gutted as he only eats meat and potatoes ( no veg at all - well except baked beans !)

I am a meat eater and I wouldnt be miffed at all if someone served me up a veggie meal, and I think your ok to do so! As you said with a good professional chef you can get some really tasty imaginative dishes!

Unless you write on the menu or invites that its going to be a veggie meal I doubt many people will notice.

I was thinking of having something italian, I could then call it a fancy name and it would be so delicious nobody would even notice it didn't include any meat hehe

I must the be the weirdest vegetarian going as I really dont like vegetables (only potatoes and peas) so I think I'm going to have quite a task on my hands!

I think it all depends on what vegetarian meals you go for. We once went to a wedding where the bride was completely and utterly environmentally friendly (we even had someone come round to look at our carbon footprints in the evening!) but I personally didn't like the food at all. This was mainly because the options she picked contained either food I didn't like or couldn't eat. But I think maybe something like pasta, salads, etc would be really really nice especially if you're having a summer wedding.

If it was me I think I would have a normal option as well as a vegetarian option. Or maybe a buffet is the way to go?

Well we will be having a buffet on the evening, so couldn't really have 2 buffets could I?

I really don't want to include meat, I will feel like such a hypocrite.

Glad to see some other veggies on here too, I feel like an outcast when I tell people I don't eat meat!

    Hi Moonpig

All this talk of food has made me hungry

When we first went to our venue MIL2B and FIL2B insisted on coming...just to stick their noses in! In how..... we did the walk around had chat with co-ordinator and paid deposit. We went back to our cars I got in and H2B was talking outside. I heared him say in a hushed tone " we have to be carefull bacause she is a vegetarian!" ...no s*** like he didnt know! They have a real problem , maybe I should have insisted on a fully veggie meal just to open their eyes a little!

I don't see anything wrong with a veggie meal at all. first of all - its just one meal and people will not starve - even without the veggie debate you will have fussy eaters who will not like what they're given and complain - whether its fish, pork or vegetables (this is part of the reason we're having a buffet). I wouldn't make an issue out of it - I wouldn't even pt it in the invite, why do people need to know in advance - it's not like they'll pop to KFC on the way to the wedding, is it? (saying that a friend of mine's relatives popped into McDonalds after the meal - how rude!!).

I'm a meat eater and would not think anything of it, But I'm quite lax about these things and would eat just about anything...

I'm a veggie too, but me and other half are like Jack Spratt and his wife - i dont eat meat, fish or eggs and he doesnt like veg! On this basis we are having a meaty menu with a veggie option (but as it's my day and i am going to make sure it is very tasty rather than the normal afterthought you end up with!)

I dont think you need to tell people in advance but i guess you do need to ask about any dietary requirements, wheat intolerance for example could make italian difficult for some!

Im in the same situation as you and I think im going to go for an all veggie meal but make sure I pick one that people wont obviously notice it is veggie.

I cannot honestly say that i will enjoy my day as much as possible knowing ive been responsibl;e for the animals served on the plate.

    Oh supports me on this.

I am checking i f there is anything peolpe are allergic to as id hate to serve something say wiht nuts and find out lots of people have allergies etc.. My bridesmaid is allergic to mushrooms and she's a veggie!

I'd be perfectly happy with a vegetarian meal even though I'm not veggie myself and frequently pick the veggie option off a set menu if I just don't fancy the meat option. If you are going to be upset at the thought of providing a meat meal then don't - who's going to be offended by a yummy risotto or a vegetable torte or whatever? Our vegetarian option is Mushroom, spinach and ricotta filo pastry bundles and my brother (generally a dedicated carnivore) is thinking about opting for the veggie menu just because it sounds nice!

December, that sounds bizarre - Think I'd feel it was a like a fitness fanatic bride having someone go round all the guests to weigh them!?

I think you've probably answered your own question then; if you really don't want to include meat then don't. It's your wedding at the end of the day and if people don't like it then that's down to them.

Alternatively, I don't know what time your ceremony is but you could maybe have it a little later in the day and just have one big buffet for both daytime and evening guests. Just an idea.

I personally might initially feel a bit miffed at not having meat but I would understand and completely respect your decision to not serve any meat.

Also, like you say, some Italian meals don't contain meat and as a meat eater I don't feel like I'm being 'short changed' when I eat them. For example, you could start with a bruscetta, then have spinach and ricotta tortellini in a sage and butter sauce, then tiramisu. As much as I like meat, I would be completely thrilled if something like that was on the menu!

Hope this has made sense! Basically what I'm trying to say is that, while I like meat very much and eat it with most meals, I would happily go without and, knowing your beliefs, would appreciate your decision.

I'm a pescatarian (sp?) - basically don't eat meat but some fish. I don't see a problem will serving a meat free meal - you know your guests and what they will like? We are having a meat meal and I will eat fish for vegetarian. I'll be the only non meat eater there!

I'm not vegetarian but I wouldn't have a problem eating a meat free meal although I think like other people have said it does depend on what it is - I've been to a wedding where neither the bride or groom was vegetarian but they served a meat free meal (to save costs I suppose?) and they chose a kind of meat loaf option but stuffed with vegetables instead and then served it with more vegetables which didn't really work. Agree that something like a pasta or risotto would be much better!
