Venue Help in London!!! - Particularly City

ej1981, 14 August, 2012 at 13:10 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hi Everyone!

Long time reader first time poster :-)

I've just spent about 3 days trawling the archives and have found some brilliant ideas for my reception so thank you to everyone who has posted about London weddings in the past few yrs, but I thought I would put a quick post up to see if anyone has any extra ideas for venues which are not your typical "wedding" venue!

We're looking for a reception venue only (it'll be a private ceremony), and probably only for the evening, so hopefully that will save on costs a little.

Anywhere either in London or just outside.

Something very casual but a classy venue, either a buffet or a bbq would be best to keep the casual feel, no first dance, no speeches, no traditions! Don't need loads of flowers or chair covers or stuff like that. Simple and elegant (though I do love candles!)

The problem is that we're on a budget and also we don't have the time or energy to do a lot of work ourselves hence we'd like the location to provide the whole package. We're happy to opt for a pub if it's a pretty or unusual one.

Stuff I'd love:

- really unusual location! We'd love one of the rooms in the tower of london but the venue hire is just too much. Also looked at natural history museum and a couple of others.

- If we went for a winter wedding (date is negotiable but will be early next year) I love the idea of an open fire or a heated courtyard! A firepit would be amazing.

- Whole package (food and wine/beer all night, all the trimmings) under £5k! I know it's a tight budget but there's got to be some nice locations we can get a casual bbq and drinks for this?

My other thought (in the title) was to find a restaurant or bar in the City that's usually closed at weekends and maybe does min spend rather than venue hire price - I've looked at a few and they usually ome in under budget but just haven't found the right one yet.

Oh also one last thing - does anyone know of any venues at all that will do a winter bbq?? Maybe with a covered heated ourdoor area or something? A bbq seems like the cheapest and most fun option but we don't want to wait til summer!

Thank so much everyone

EJ xx

I've been planning our London wedding for October 2012 for the past 6 weeks and I've done loads of homework. We are on a budget (I'm doing a 2nd degree at the mo) and only have 20 guests. After much searching we are going with a posh pub food menu in a private dining room in a gastropub. One way I found of stealing other people's ideas was to look at London photographers blogs and read through until it shows where they had their reception - that gave me a lot of good leads - as well as all the helpful people on here. I'm going to list a few things below that might at least start a bit of research for you.

    The Crabtree W6

    Duke of Wellington

    The Hollywood Arms

The Peasant EC1 (? Too big upstairs and too small downstairs)

    Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

    The Crowne and Two Chairmen

    The White Swan

    Princess of Shoreditch

    Duke of Wellington

    The Albion

Lots Road Pub and Dining room

    The Bollo

    The Prince Albert

White horse (and the others in the same group)

    The Union Club

The White horse liver pool st

    Clerkenwell Kitchen

    The Ship

    Swan at the Globe

From what I can remember the Crabtree and Ship had outside areas - didn't look much into this though.

Hope this gives some food for thought.

    Happy hunting.

    CT

Forgot to say have you looked at that Virgin roof top garden place - looked lovely and also London Zoo. Saw a wedding at a barge museum or somewhere like that in Central London. Good luck!

Went past here the other day - never been in but it's right by Lambeth Palace so is a lovely location:

Maybe a boat along the Thames could be fun? Not sure on your numbers but this one came up top on google and has an online calculator (I hate having to email to get info on prices!)

    Hello fellow Londoner

How many people does the venue need to hold? Is it just for food and drink or you planning on a disco/band or some other type of venue?

Here are a few although not sure if they are the right size for what you want.

I second Kensington roof gardens although may be over budget /

    Grays Inn (Chancery Lane)

Runnymede hotel Richmond (that do wedding and boat cruise packages that sounds pretty cool)

Wow, thanks for all the great ideas!

@chocolatetiger1 - thanks so much for the extensive list! And the roof gardens was definitely one I looked at, it looks amazing, unfortunately looks like it's not available on Saturday nights (we have to have a Saturday wedding for various reasons) :-(

@funkyjameseo - we *think* it'll be around 70 people, we have sort of "cut-off points" on our guestlist depending on prices (like the first section is people we can't live without being there, the second section people we'd love to be there, 3rd section we'd like them there...) but I reckon when all is said and done it'll be between 60 - 70. We'd love a band with live music but that would depend on finding a cheap venue and having some of the budget left for it! We'd also be happy with just ipod played through a music system if we couldn't afford a band but some of the more unusual/unique places are just daytime or not suitable for a disco so maybe we would have a few hours at the venue and then try to hire a private section of our hotel bar or a bar nearby to continue with just drinks and dancing.

I think we're just waiting for inspiration to hit. Since we want to get married before the summer it's hard to find a casual location that isn't just a normal pub - a lot of the places we could have a lovely casual reception at would be an outdoor bbq or something which isn't really viable in the winter!

Thanks for everything so far, if anyone has any totally off the wall ideas or particularly winter ideas (open fires and mulled wine on the cheap?!) then I really look forward to hearing them!!

    EJ :-)

That would be great! I'm happy to do some legwork if there's even one fabulous venue in the pile!

I'll throw some cool and kooky places into the ring:

Shoreditch House - complete with bowling alley (Bicuit tin + Biscuit Pin) - Lots of cool places outside to take photos, graffiti backdrops etc.

    https://www.sohohouse.com/

    A wedding I did there

    or

    MC Motors http://www.castlegibson.com/locations/mc-motors/

Out of the two, MC Motors has the potential to be the most awesome but it you want to be less hands on then my vote goes back to Shoreditch.

If you're looking for something more unique, these two are awesome.

Another amazing venue is the Old Finsbury Town Hall, I'll try and dig out the price list that they sent.

Found that quicker than I thought -

Booked prior to September 1st 2012 the hire of The Old Finsbury Town Hall with exclusive access is £3,250. The booking runs from midday to midnight using the Great Hall and Council Chamber. It is possible to extend the venue hire hours until up to 02.00am, at a cost of £350 per hour.

Have you tried livery companies around the city -Carpenter/Goldsmith/Cook/Drapers? They have some amazing hall within the city and I dont think they charge to much!

Our friends had their reception at The Larrik in Marylebone after getting married at the Marylebone town hall around the corner.

Islington Town Hall is nice, and there's a bar opposite called the Vineyard that can be hired, and since they have a courtyard they may do a BBQ for you?

London on a budget is tough but not impossible!!

    Hi EJ

How about the Trafalgar Tavern is right on the River. Large Ballroom upsatairs without the price tag. Went to a 40th Wedding Anniversary party there & it was lovely.
