Most people go seasonal or sometimes the colours of their football team but we wanted something different that fit in with our venue. We had our wedding at a castle that was very neutral, beige brickwork and no real colour. We had pastel rainbow, so all our adult Bridesmaids in different pastel colours, little ones had sashes and petals in their dresses in pastel colours and the men in more neutral suits. People had reservations that it was too much but on the day we had so many comments on how amazing it all looked and our photographer said it was the best scheme he had ever photographed as the colours popped so much. Few pics for you for inspo

It evolved quite accidentally for us. I decided to wear navy shoes and sapphire jewellery and my OH designed our wedding invitations on his own with navy & ivory colours. So when we started thinking about decor we realised that the colours of my outfit and our invitations matched so why didn't we use those colours elsewhere.

So it doesn't have to be something you consciously choose but you may find a particular item you want and build from there.

I realised I had used a lot of colour in my bouquet and couldn't really find a colour that didn't clash, worked for summer and worked for all my bridesmaids (diff skin tones and hair colours) so we went what we consider to be neutral with dark green so the colours would stand out against it x

We've gone for shades of sea blues mixed with tans/golds (and white of course!) because of our beach venue - decided the setting was so beautiful we didn't want to compete or risk clashing with it.

A great piece of advice I heard was to look around your house and see what colours you've decided to surround yourself with day to day, as they will likely feel the most timeless to you/least likely to change your mind on. I used this as a sense check and while my house is very colourful it definitely errs to being a bit nautical as we have some shade of sea blue and/or beach painting in every room!

My dress is blush pink so I’m going blush cream and a tiny bit of burgundy maybe foliage or a berry

Look at images of weddings and see what they have

My colours are dark purple because it was my late moms favourite colour. I wanted her with me and this is my way of having her there x

My partner is colour blind so to make it easier for him to get involved in planning we went with burgundy, blues, burnt orange, sage green. Pinterest has some great colour ideas if you're stuck! Good luck Smiley smile

Think about favourite colours in decor & clothing. What about favourite flowers? Do either of you have a particular item you know you want to wear (jewelry, tie, tweed jacket, kilt)?

If you're really stuck, then have a look at your wedding venue. Or start looking at various items for your wedding and see if any colour themes crop up.

My OH wanted to wear a kilt for our wedding, and when we each shortlisted our favourite wedding designs, the only design to appear on both our lists was in blue tones which went with his kilt. So we had our colour scheme without even planning it!

Ours happened quite quickly. He said what colour he liked which was not what I'd have gone for. Quick browse on Pinterest and we have his colour and a shade of mine being a perfect match. Job done. Thank god for Pinterest

I have gone for bridesmaids in a champagne colour, groomsmen in grey, I’m in ivory along with my daughter (flower girl) and our decor is ivory/white florals and dark green foliage (lots of florals) and then I’ve got clear acrylic centrepieces and lots of glassware.
I’m very minimal and not very daring with colour so my colour scheme basically came from my usual everyday dress sense and even home style, whites, nudes etc it’s just who I am unfortunately but if I had tons of colour it wouldn’t be me 🙂.

I originally planned on the classic blush, sage, gold combination. But then I ordered some free invitation samples and the burnt orange card with gold foiling stole my heart and turned me to a full Autumnal palette!

We're going for burgundy and white. My sister who will be my bridesmaid liked a burgundy dress and I thought it was nice. Red is a lucky colour in Chinese tradition too. The groom and best man will probably go for navy blue suits and then matching burgundy/red ties and buttonhole.

    Hi Ann-Marie,

Great question! When selecting your wedding colours I would suggest thinking about the season you are getting married in, what colours would compliment the venue, your favourite colour(s) and what your interests are.

I would then suggest you begin building 2-3 moodboards using something like pinterest to gather those colours and see which one you lean towards more.

Sit on it for a bit and go back to your boards to see if you have changed your mind, or whether you keep preferring the first one you liked most.

    With love,

    Laura

My partners kilt came with a silk cravat. He liked 4 of them, I didn’t like 2 so it boiled down to just two choices of colour which we would then match.
