Wedding Dress fitting problems

haltonmummy, 2 August, 2008 at 19:06 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hello

I ordered my dress ages ago and it's finally come in but I'm a bit worried as it doesn't fit. My Mum keeps telling me to stop worrying but I can't help it so I think I may need a virtual slap from you lot !!!

What happened is that I ordered a size 16 and I think I was expecting it to fit perfectly (apart from the length) so I was gutted when it was far too big round the chest area, which feels worse as I am quite big busted (34FF).

Anyway, did or does anyone else have this problem? Is there any dress HIbs out there who can reassure me that the dress can be altered to fit me?

If anyone has any reassuring words please can you let me hear them as I am really down about this whole thing.

Thanks

I'm sure it will be fine. Other people have had their dresses taken in quite a bit.

What did they say in the shop?

    Try not to worry ?

Too big is better than too small - a good dressmaker will most likely be able to sort it out for you. Have you got a picture of the dress?

When My dress first came in to the shop - 6 months before my wedding, it was too tight across my chest - and I was worried that it was going to be really uncomfortable - I ended up losing a stone in the following 6 months, so that my dress had to be taken in everywhere apart from the chest! You wouldn't have been able to tell it had been touched on the day! So I'd say a dress maker will be able to sort it for you! What did your dress shop say?

    Hi

The shop didn't say much really. They seemed more interested in getting me out of the shop. The person who is altering the dress has now moved on but is still honouring orders, but I haven't actually saw, her, I have spoke to her and told her how I felt but she took the whole thing the wrong way and thought that I was questioning her seamstress capabilities!!!

I'm having my fitting on 15 September so I have got just over 6 weeks to wait. I know I need to try and get a grip of this whole wedding thing is beginning to get to me a bit - after 13 years and 2 kids together I never expected for one minute to feel like this - I tohught the whole thing was going to be a breeze, how wrong I was!!!!

Forgive me - I am feeling really sorry for myself.

Dress makers can take dresses in up to 2 dress sizes from what I remember.

Try not to worry about it too much and speck to the shop. They should offer alternation services.

Really don't worry about it. When I ordered my dress, I measured 1/2 inch bigger on the bust than the size 10 measurements but they said to get it anyway, it would be fine. I worried for 9 months that it would be too small and look terrible and now it's come in...it's too big on the bust and I'm going to have it taken in. I'm not worried - it's the kind of alteration that wedding dress seamstresses do all the time, it will be absolutely fine - and how lovely that your dress is too big ?

Helo there, i hope i can put your mind to rest. I use to ,make and fit wedding dresses until last year when i had a my baby.

This is a really common alteration. 8 out of 10 dresses need altering either at the bust or at the side seams under the arm or sometimes both (if the dress has a zip not a lace up back).

I use to alter up to 300 dresses a year, it was quite rare to just put a dress on a bride and to find only the hem needed taking up. Unless the dress had a lace up back these can usually be adjusted with the laces to fit.

its always better to take a dress in rather than let it out, thats why the shop will always order to the widest measurement. Sometimes letting out a dress can leave marks down the side seems where to original seem was sewn in the factory.

The dress will have been order to fit the widest part of you usually the hips or waist sometimes the bust. These dress are made to standard sizes not to the brides measurments. So if your waist or hips are a 16 and your bust is a 14 they will order a 16. It also depends on the style and cut of the dress. I'm supprised the shop owner or the fitter didnt explain this to you instead of leaving you worrying until your fitting, weeks away.

Its a straight forward alteration please try not to worry.

All the very best and look forwards to your wedding it will be here before you know it xxx your going to have a fab time and look absolutly stunnung too!!

    jc xx

Its much easier to make a dress smaller than larger, my dress needed lots of work (I'd put weight on) and it was fine in the end. Unless you have a really hard to modify dress it'll be totally fine.

Don't worry!!! I went from having a shapeless frock to a svelte, perfectly fitting dream thanks to the skills of a very talented seamstress.

Talk to your seamstress as soon as possible and spend as much time with her as you need to allay your fears. If you are really anxious, I suggest bringing your 1st meeting with her forward. Hopefully she'll be able to reassure you and can relax a little and stress about other things a bit more!

I'd echo the "don't worry" sentiments! The size I've ordered will definitely be way too big on my bust (i have a big bum!!), but the shop and seamstress said it would be no problem at all to alter (and it will need altering quite a bit as the whole dress is very fitted). This is what they do for a living, and i think it's very rare that any bride's dress fits perfectly pre-alterations.

What dress is it anyway, we like pics ?

    (edited because i can't spell!)

Echoing the "don't worry" part of the thread.

I had my first dress fitting yesterday after buying my dress in the sale in Novemeber.

I was worried cos I'd tried it on a few times at my mum's and i thought it fit ok but it depressed me cos I kept thinking i needed to lose weight ☹️

Anyway, as soon as it was pinned yesterday I felt so much better as the lovely lady has to alter the straps and take it in quite a bit at the seam- so hopefully I''l look skinnier than I thought I ever was without killing myself trying to lose the half stone that just won't budge! ?

And I didn't even get mine done at the shop but at a local seamstresses. She's taken my hen night dress in at the bust too, and you soooo can't tell.

Sending you happy vibes as it will be fine and you'll look gorgeous x
