Wedding hates and dislikes

Sorry if this has been done before - I'm sure it has - but I haven't seen a similar topic since I've been a member, so I thought I would get a light hearted discussion going! What things do you REALLY dislike at weddings, and what do you just not like very much? personally I really don't like it...

What things do you REALLY dislike at weddings, and what do you just not like very much?

personally I really don't like it when the bride and groom does a 'funny' first dance. I'm sure some people like it and find it funny, but I just find it super cringe and naff.

This might be a bit controversial, but I also really don't like vintage / birdcage themes anymore. They were lovely when they first started, but after seeing them at every other wedding, I think they've just gotten a bit meh. Again though I'm fully open to other people's tastes and if the bride or groom loves this look, then I still believe they should have what they want without caring what others think.

By that time my dress will probably be wrecked with gravy and wine! Haha!! No cheesy music?!? I don't think I'd cope!! Though my H2B has drawn the line at me having the string quartet version of Mmmmbop as my entrance song...which is a shame as it sounds great ?

I feel the need to do this! H2B gave me "the look" earlier while little one was listening to his Disney cd and "You've got a friend in me" from Toy Story came on. The look that says "don't even suggest it or I'll be serving divorce papers before we're even married". He never said no Mmmmm bop though.

Oh no, we do have some actually! forgot our pop hour!! Mmmbop is one of them, as well as backstreet boys, britney spears, 911, one direction, westlife, take that and the ten minute long 5ive megamix Smiley laugh

When I said cheesy I meant macarena/ hey baby/ amarillo/ saturday night dj-esque choicees. 90's boy and girl bands are most definitely NOT vito-ed!!! YAY! Smiley laugh

Perfect! I was really struggling to find a song for the guests taking their seats. I think it's appropriate. We (rather sickeningly) always sign cards/texts etc to each other "Love you to Infinity and Beyond" so it works.

Royal Blue or Forest Green schemes

Any form of chicken breast for the main course

Themes...football, bands etc. I don't get what that has to do with a wedding.

    Balloons

    Sweetie buffets

    'Beige' buffets

    Ring Cushions

Displaying random old items to make it a vintage theme i.e. a typewriter..

Using jamjars as glasses..you wouldn't do it at home, why make your guests do it at your wedding?

    Cartoonists

    Magicians

    Brooch bouquets

    Cartoony cake toppers

Beige buffets made me laugh Smiley smile

Just as aside, does everyone generally hate magicians? We haven't booked one, but I have considered it to keep the kids entertained during the speeches. It was suggested to me but part of me though thinks the kids should be at the speeches as a few of them are part of the bridal party. Maybe just some garden games for during the reception and a bag of little things to do at each of their place settings will suffice. What's everyone else done about that?

    I don't!

Not everyone likes magic but it always goes down well with the vast majority of guests. I did a wedding for a Hitcher (Watfordlass) a couple of weeks ago and she has written a review on my Hitched listing.

I do love a good wedding, although I do a have a few pet hates:

    Red/burgundy

dresses with the line of colour down the back - mainly red

Ill fitting wedding dresses - if you are spending so much on a dress, surely you would want it to fit properly

    too much cleavage on show

    Swirly waistcoats

    buffets as the main meal

BALLOONS!!! OH finds it funny how offensive I find them :/

Receiving lines - boring and pointless imo

throwing the bouquet - Im having a brooch bouquet and reeeaaallly don't think people will appreciate me launching that at them!

'funny' first dances - wheres the romance?!

rubbish DJs who think they are the worlds greatest comedian

people not dancing/no atmosphere (my biggest fear aswell!)

I am excited about wearing my lace dress to my dusky pink wedding with birdcage & candelabra centrepieces, sweet buffet, photobooth and vintage suitecase cardbox though Smiley winking

but I did draw the line at OH wearing pink, I love my wedding colours but feel its unfair to put him through that so he chose silver Smiley smile

I felt it was very unfair to dictate what her wore, plus I like that he will look different to the rest of the bridal party.

...another pet hate....brides smoking! even when I smoked I always said I wouldnt on my wedding day.

I am also part of the oop's upside your head gang...may have to ban it for my own dignity haha

    Oh god...

    I had the following:

    *pink bridesmaids

    *cup cakes

*the dreaded chair covers.. The swirly carpet clashed with the green chairs..

    *ivory shoes

    *strapless dress

    *colour scheme

Actually didn't do to bad lol. I dislike..

*people getting married in churches because it looks pretty

    *rubbish DJ's/no one dancing

    *funny first dances

*and finally people who wear cream/white to weddings!

I like the cake...its when couples feel the need to ram it in each others faces in what I can only assume is what they perceive to be a display of affection that I hate. Why would you want to be picking icing off your face for the rest of the day?!

Seriously why do people do this? Do you think they get really fed up with their new husband/wife that quickly that they feel the need to shove cake in their face?? Soooo don't get it!

Conference type rooms for ceremony/rest of day

Swirly waistcoats, top hat and tails (which is exactly what I had pictured for so long but hate it now!!)

Red, especially winter/xmas weddings with red (again precisely what I had always imagined!!)

    Sweet buffets/chocolate/fountains/ice cream vans

Getting obsessed with 'being different'. If you think it's different that probably means that it's actually really fashionable right now!!! Just choose things you like surely?

    Dove/butterfly releases

Cheap weddings that aren't actually cheap. By this I mean: crap venue, cold buffet for food, crap DJ, dress from china etc and then finding out they still spent £10k. There are some really good deals to be had if you shop around!

Crap food. I expect to have something hot and enough of it to soak up the alcohol I will be drinking.

Those ugly squared off/pointy satin bridal shoes that so many of the bridal shops still stock (mentioned by a few already) they make me vom.

Staged photos, especially when they take forever and the TOG is shouting stupid words at you to try and make you smile. Awful.

Balloon arches or centrepieces. In fact balloons anywhere, unless they're those giant ones that are all over pinterest atm- I love them!!!

Guests wearing a dress that clearly resembles a wedding dress. Not all white/cream dresses are a problem, but a cream maxi dress is taking the p a little.

Receiving lines, I think these are generally moving out of vogue now.

People who will sit there and say "we'd rather spend the money on our honeymoon than other people" meaning we are left poorly fed and entertained.

That hideous dress that has been flashed with the red band. It is the stuff of nightmares for me!

Lace-up wedding dresses. Which unless my seamstress can work wonders I will be wearing at my own wedding :/

currently my problem, for my 'cheap' 8k wedding were doing a civil ceremony in the hotel (were not religious, a church despite how much mum wants. it would be a hypocritic choice) fortunately they 'naturalised it' hard wood floor, cream walls, mirror where the canvas was but trying to think of how to 'jazz it up' with out balloon/flower archies, bloody chair covers, sashes etc etc. But big 90cm and 90cm balloons are turning my head Smiley tongue but it'll need a touch more.

I also hate the cake in each others faces..paying a fortune for hair & make up to be smothered in a bit of sponge cake, so pointless and if OH did that to me i'd punch him in the face haha.

I love these threads :-D Hate is such a strong word!

I like a wedding which reflects the couple. So I suppose this makes me 'hate' weddings with a formal feel if the couple aren't usually formal. If they eat in smart restaurants a lot then fine. It's the reflection of the poeple that i really like.

The idea of wedding dresses is odd, now I come to think about it. Several people on this thread have said that morning dress looks odd on men as it is too formal (even though it is theoretically the correct attire) and yet almost all of us are splashing out on a formal long dress in white/ivory.

I love weddings. I am going through my second tranche: I went to all my friends' weddings and now I get to go to their children's. The only thing that I don't enjoy is when there are huge gaps of time with no information what to expect so everyone is just standing there. This is doubly bad if there is no food/drink and quadrupally bad if we are all outside. For example if there is nothing for the guests to do while photos are being taken, or if something overruns and no contingency is in place, or the photographer goes a little mad and the breakfast gets put back and back. The only person who doesn't know that the Chef is about to kill someone is the bride herself (the photographer doesn't care) and we all end up eating dessicated food which the chef takes the blame for.

My favourite weddings are always a really good fit for the couple and family. Ultra chic in a boutique hotel eating tiny portions of exquisite delicacies, or boogying to a jazz trio in a garden in rural Lincolnshire eating mini burgers and cheesecakes. It's all good as long as the couple are having a great time and are not out of their comfort zone.
