Worst spelling of a name EVER

Ok, just watching Four Weddings and one of the brides spells her name Chivonne. I ask you. Ridiculous. It really riles me when parents try to be edgy and spell their kids' names bizarrely - what's the weirdest spelling you've ever seen? (there are usually loads in Chat magazine LOL)

I'm a Kathryn but not surprisingly, this gets spelt in a hundred different ways, I'm forever spelling it out for people, no with a K, no E, with a Y etc etc.

I do know a chevaize, pronounced shevvy!

    Me too!!

In one class I taught a Casey (boy) & a Kaci (girl). As they were pronounced the same we had to refer to them as boy or girl casey!

I'm the same and not a Victoria, which people always assume. There were 3 vicky's in my class when I was at school but I was the only 'real' vicky as the others were victoria. My mum wanted to give me and my sister names that couldn't be shortened, however we did get names that rhyme with anything under the sun! sister is kelly

I was reading a magazine yesterday and there was some reader article about a lady who went to the gym to get fit, and her trainer was called Szymon. Which I assume is a silly spelling of Simon? Lol.

Probably a foreign name. My OH's name has an 's' sound in it but is spelt with an 'sz' because in his parents' language 's' is pronounced 'ssh', while 'sz' is pronounced 'sss'. I think their version of simon is spelt with an sz or else it would be pronounced 'Shimon' lol. OH gets really annoyed with people who pronounce the 'sz' like 'zzz' and people who skip the s in his name.

My favourite mispronunciation of a name (which I think I've mentioned before on here) is of a boy my aunt used to teach called Guy. His mum had read it in a book and thought it was a nice name but wasn't sure how to pronounce it. So the poor kid was stuck with being called 'gooey'.

This is my middle name and has foxed many people over the years; I have taken many a step to pre-warn people at things like graduation ceremonies and so on.

Your bafflement is normal but misplaced - why assume that you would apply English language rules to a non-English language? Even if it IS written in the same alphabet, which leads to......

In Gaelic, the "m" is pronounced as a "v" (same as the "b" in Siobhan - when you pronouce Siobhan correctly, obviously). This is just part of the language and no more strange that getting an "f" sound at the end of "cough" in English. In the original, this "m" (or "b") would be written with a dot above the letter and no "h" after it. However, the international push to standardise the alphabet has meant that the dot is lost and an "h" is added. The "h" is not a letter in Irish, it's an operation that tells you how to pronounce another letter. That's why there are so many "h"s.

And that's also why it's not "they" (by this you mean "the Irish"?) who get a "v" out of "mh", it's the rest of the world who made it so. Smiley smile

The best Irish name for bafflement though? Narbhflaith.

And the best name I've heard mispelt? Ruby, with two "b"s and an "ie". Yes, it's Rubbie.

The worst I've heard is spelt: La-A and pronounced as you would read it: La dash a.

Versace McClatchie, and his little sisters Gucci and Armani. I kid you not!!!

Have also heard of a Pocahontas.

    Ah I love Glasgow!!!

I have a cousin who is a Henri. He isn't French, or a girl. No idea why they called him that. It's still pronounced exactly like "Henry".

My name is Arabic and therefore a) it is unusual in this country and b) there are many different variant spellings since, obviously, you can translate letters differently. I don't have the most common spelling of my name but it isn't a particularly unusual spelling either!

My auntie works in a school so sees lots of unusual spellings. Apparently once a colleague came in ranting about a parent naming their kid Rebecca... "but you'll never guess what stupid newfangled way they've spelt it, they've done it R-E-B-E-K-A-H!" My auntie had to tell her that it's a very common variant spelling, found in the Bible, and not something the kid's mum had made up!

My name is Nia, which is a very common Welsh name, pronounced "knee-ah". When people see it written down, they most commonly call me "nigh-ah".

When I speak to non-welsh people on the phone and say my name, they always seem to turn it into something else - Lia, Mia, Nina. I've even had Katrina!

I believe St Mungo is patron saint of Glasgow (or there's some Glasgow connection there anyway). It's not a common name even round here but not unheard of either. It does just make me think of Mungo Jerry though...

My OH is called Jay, quite a simple name, a bit more common now than it was when he was young, but it drives him MENTAL because whenever he says it people think he's just iving an initial. So every time he says it he has to say "Jay, thats J A Y"
