Your best mnemonic?

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 28 March, 2012 at 11:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 1 45

Following on from the mnemonics used to remember how to spell "necessary"...

My best mnemonic is Can I Kill Shakin' Stevens For Making Oxo.

Unlimited credit to anyone who can guess what it's a mnemonic for....*

Anyone else use mnemonics? Maybe a guessing game?

*It's a homemade one so it won't show on Google, you cheaters...

My favourite was always for the colours of the rainbow - it was a local one as it relates to Ipswich FC beating Arsenal in the 1978 FA Cup Final:

    It used to be:

My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets.

However, Pluto is now classed as a star so it's been ruined.

Pluto is no longer classed as a planet, but nor is it a star (the existence of another star in our solar system is unfathomable). It's simply a lump of rock and ice, orbiting the sun, somewhat eccentrically.

ETA: That is possibly the driest and most humourless post I've ever written. Let's cheer it up a bit.

Aah yes. But can you imagine the hilarity of a bunch of 11 year old boys when reading it through like this...

    My - Mecury

    etc to

    Up - Uranus...

We were taught that first and then as a school we were taught the second as it was 'local history to be celebrated'!

I have read that songs are regarded as the best way to remember information. Think how many song lyrics you have rattling around in your head, which you can recall even years and years later.

I use the "Never Eat Shredded Wheat" one, along with "Richard of York, gave battle in Vain".

I also have a daft one of my Nan's which I still use to spell "Contents" (which was a word I have always had a mental block about spelling) - "Connie Onnie, Naughty Tonnie, Eating Nellie's Toffee Sticks". I have no idea how Nan came up with that, but I've used it for years!

Malt Vinegar Every Morning Just Suppose You Never Pay. Except Uranus is not spelled with a Y.

    <p>

Apparently indigo is no longer recognised as a separate colour of the rainbow and her school now teaches Richard Of York Gave Battle Valiantly. Since when I ask you, since when!
