Cycling - any Hitched fans?

Soobo, 20 August, 2009 at 14:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

I know that Hitched has lots of runners, but do we have any keen cyclists? I've taken this up this year and really beginning to get into it, to the extent that I'm off to Germany in a couple of weeks to do the Bodensee which is going to be 280km in total. (Not bad for a lard arse that could just about manage 5 miles to start with)

Has anyone done this trip/route? There seems to be some pretty steep stuff around Walhausen...any trip reports??

S xx

    Doughnut's a keen cylist.

I used to be OK (but commuter cycling, not hills?) however having my bike nicked last year means I'm not exactly in the best shape cycling-wise at the mo.

My husband is the cycist in this family although his passion is off-road rather than on-road. He competes for the local bike shop and his next endurance race is the Bank Holiday weekend when he's doing the Gorrick 12/12 (constanly riding around a 8-10 mile track for 12 hours, the one with the most laps wins), I think he's doing it solo.

He's also done two charity bike rides, one across Borneo and one across Mexico, he trying to prusuade me that he's due another one but I'm not convinced as it's normally a 10 days ride.

is the Germany one on-road or off-road?

Oh I'm a road biker, I can't be doing with all that mud and sheer terror of heading down rocky slopes - I'm such a scaredy-cat. The German tour is predominantly road, there are off-road sections, but more akin to cycling tracks and paths than the proper off-road stuff that you need knobbly tyres for...skinny wheels for me :o)

I'm worried that I'm even considering Lands End John O'Groats next year - I swear the usual Soobo has been abducted by aliens!!! lol

WSS, were off to the alps tomorrow so H can hurl himself down them....

He does cycle to work everyday though so is sort of half and half road / off road and regularly goes out with the local tri club on his road bike...

Essex mum - does your h do dusk till dawn??? H photographed it last year and is planning on doing so again this year!

I like cycling but prefer flats - dont do hills either up or down

ILS - yes probably he tries to do all the enduro races, when is it? He did Mayham this year but missed SITS as we were on holiday.

I got into cycling about a year ago after not having ridden a bike for 15 years! I'm not quite up to the sort of thing you are doing but I have done and am doing again the London Freewheel/Sky Ride which is a cycle to Buckingham Palace from (for me) NE London. It's the only excercise I have kept up for and actually enjoy.

I've only got into it this year since starting a job nearer home and selling my car. I love it! There's some lovely countryside round here (Swindon) and I did about 15 miles after work last night. Every morning I cycle in past the baby bunnies and birds with worms hanging out of their beaks. I try and drag the husband out to get him a bit fitter so we can go on some sort of cycling holiday.

A guy at work just did John O'Groat's to Land's End in 12 days.... I'm not that keen ?

Yep, I'm a cyclist (and a runner). I cycle to work, but I also like a long ride at weekends. *snigger*

I've done London to Brighton a couple of times, and I'm toying with the idea of London to Paris next year.

Bodensee sounds fabulous. Germany is so picturesque. I quite fancy cycling along the banks of the Rhine.

Banks of the Rhine sounds lovely. I'm really looking forward to the Bodensee but already looking for the next!? www.headwater.co.uk do a great range of cycling hollibobs but pretty expensive, I did a canoeing one with them a few years ago.

Doughnut - I'm also near Swindon!! I love going out for a spin after work and am addicted to www.bikehike.co.uk for route planning

Lovely to hear there are some cycling hitchers - prepare yourselves for questions ?

My H is the cyclist in the family, and is into the cyclo sportives. He loves the Tour of Flanders (Ronde van Vlaanderen) which is done the day before the professionals do it. it starts in Bruges and finishes in Ninove, outside Brussels and is a good one for supporters as its easy to drive around. And there's an Ibis in Bruges which is cheap but lovely and friendly and cycling oriented. And the Belgians are so supportive of cycling, lots of clapping and cheering for all cyclists.

I asked last night and as it's in Thetford Forest it's a bit too far for him to go to, however I just had a lightbulb moment. Now I'm no longer working Friday nights I might suggest to him thast we do a trade-off - he doesn the bike ride and me and the kids spend the weekend at Centre Parcs which is just around the corner, so you never know he may see you OH there!!!!

I like find the races incredibly boring as well, we very rarely go and support as the kids get so restless, it's normally a 30-40 minute wait just to see him wizzing past for 5 seconds, especially when it's cold and wet (which it normally is).
