Do black and navy 'go'?!

Buzzee, 26 March, 2011 at 13:45 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi All

I have fallen in love with a dress (Ellis 11226) and love the black waist sash it comes with. Trouble is our colour scheme for suits and bridesmaid is navy. Do you think it will look odd if i have a black sash next to everyone else in navy? You can order it in ivory and other colours (including blue but its not dark enough) but i think the black is striking and flattering! ARGH what to do! (Changing colour scheme is sadly not an option any more!) Please convince me it will look ok.

Is there some way you could encorperate black into your colour scheme as well, e.g.black ribbon round bouquets, black crytals (or something similar) on tables as well?

Lovely dress but no, black and navy look terrible together. I am hugely anal about this sort of thing though, so I'm sure others will have better things to say!! Sorry. It's one of my pet hates.

Edited: However, it's only a teeny bit of black, so maybe it would be OK. I doubt anyone woul notice (Except me, cus I'm weird). x

I'm afraid I have to agree - Black and Navy are a big no no. I don't have many rules of dressing, but that is one of them...

Could your seamstress not change the sash for a darker blue when it comes in? I'm sure they'd be able to redo the embellishments. Might cost a bit more in alterations but I'm sure it would be possible? Lovely dress btw ?

Black and navy would work with our theme (sci-fi spacey sort of thing!) but ordinarily it'd look a bit odd.

Can you not order your dress with a navy sash instead?

Oh No Smiley sad I have googled it and lots of people say navy and black can go together, but mainly american sites!

Yeah she could 'easily' take off the sash and unpick the detail (it is all 1 big brooch essentially) but even with a really dark blue i'm just not sure it will be as nice. Worried it won't contrast against the ivory as much as the black does. Unless i can find a very very very dark blue (almost black) ribbon! lol!

Thanks for saying the dress is nice though! I think so too,? just peed off that i'd already decided on the navy before seeing it! That'll teach me to be over organised!

I agree with the others 2 dark colours together will defiantely not go. A Navy sash would look fine can you not change it?

Ooo buggerlugs our BMs are in dark blue and I'm not too keen on the fellas wearing grey suits and the other option was to have them in blue but now my OH has got himself a pair of spats in black and white I then think the only option for us is to have the chaps in black suits ?

I dunno, may have to put the colours together but the chaps will only be wearing black the flowers will be in ivory and navy feathers.

Do you already have the dress? The item description says it's available in Midnight, which I'm guessing is a dark blue. I actually think a dark blue would look lovely against the ivory and sparkle detail.

    Hi

Nope not got the dress yet but the midnight is actually very pale (well, in comparison to the black!). I've ordered a dark navy wide ribbon so gonna take that to see the dress again and see what it looks like! You can also get the sash in ivory but i'm nmot sure it would have the wow factor that the black gives it!

Thanks for all your feedback though!
