Extravagances

Storky, 27 July, 2010 at 12:18 Posted on Planning 0 48

So, I'm incredibly nosey. I make no apologies for this, it is something I'm sure I will never grow out of!

Regardless of our budgets I'm sure each and everyone of you has one extravagance that you're having for your wedding (blimey, some people may have several). What I want to know is what is your thing. It has to be the thing that you've agonised over buying/felt sick at the thought of spending money on/gone over budget/find difficult to justify but yet STILL MUST HAVE IT!

It's not the cost the counts, simply I'm interested to know what your internal struggles have been over.

For me, it was my dress. The thought of spending more than, say, £500 on a dress, for one day, has always left me in cold sweats. I couldn't justify it in the slightest. Yet I found my dress and whilst running through the gamut of 'it's the one/I can't buy it/I must buy it/I could get it second hand/but it's made just for you/buy me, buy me, buy me' I've felt queasy more times than I care to remember. Now, having paid my deposit, I feel just joy at the thought of my dress! It didn't stop me over paying on my deposit so that I only a smaller round number to pay off when it's ready though!

Extravagance yes, correct purchase, definitely!

How about you?

I'd have to say that mine is probably my dress aswell, I set myself a budget of around £650-£700, and ended up spending £1200, but I fell in love.

Also, I suppose my venue is too lol - its the only one we viewed and even though its putting our budget at around double what we wanted, its worth every penny Smiley smile

The dress for me too - I completely broke the budget and spent far more than I ever thought I would. But I felt fabulous in it so I think it was worth the money.

Also, I splashed out on jewellery but justified that by using my bonus from work, and it being something classic and timeless that I really could wear again (in fact, I have the necklace on today!)

    My Dj at £650.

He's a minor local sleb but also, he's really good actually. Keeps people on the dance floor all night which is what I want!

Well my dress was eye wateringly expensive as was my MoH's. Apart from that the only other things we did because we could (but could have done without) were a bar lady and a taxi to bring said dresses from the shop as we ran out of time.

    Flowers - £1.5k ?

yes i know they only last a few days and then they die, but they were worth every single little penny. they looked bl00dy amazing and they made our reception room look bl00dy amazing, so i make no apology for that.

Cripes bluey!! But they did look fabby in the pics :-)

Mine - my ER was way more than I thought my OH would spend (if that counts)

Otherwise randomly my BM dresses - £135 each - and my dress was only £500.

Everything else was a bit of a bargain really - negotiate, negotiate, negotiate.

Bluewater - can you flash some piccies, please? Our first quote is c£1.5k. Must admit it scared me a bit (ok, a lot). I am a sucker for some pretty flowers though.

Sounds fab, Claire. Where abouts are you getting married?

That is so true - bet we all have at least one extravagance!

Mine is dress and honeymoon - dress was about £600 over budget but like you guys I didn't even care 'cos I knew it was right for me. (Cricket your buy me buy me really made me laugh!)

We're going to Hawaii and Vegas for our honeymoon and are spending such an obscene amount but we just keep playing the 'only gonna do it once card' to ourselves as justification! Like weddings though, the honeymoon is a bit of a beast that keeps growing, as when booking hotels we were like 'well, if we're spending so much getting here, we might as well spend more on the hotels, etc, etc.' Gulp. Don't regret a penny though and we are SO excited! ?

Well it's early days for us yet and we don't have much sorted, just venue and dress (and they were within budget), but I suspect our extravagance will end up either being the food or the photography because it brings me out in cold sweats trying to make a decision on either, I'm turning into a right fusspot, lol.

As I've only just started planning really I am just beginning to struggle with extravagances! We met a photographer last night who is moe than double what I originally budgeted...eeek!! We can find the money but its just scary, but his photos were amazing and we really liked him so we may end up booking him!!!

Ours has been OHs wedding ring - the one we willl be purchasing is £1,000 which is 4 times our original budget.

The two things which made me think "blindme, howmuch?" were the photographer and dress but my dad did the photog and my mom the dress. So my thing is the shoes - I really struggled to chose some nice ones so in the end they've got £130 and I know i wont wear them again. I am just waiting for them to come now, so fingers crossed they fit.

Before we got engaged I thought people who spent heaps on weddings were loopers - however as soon as I got that ring on my finger I suddenly changed my mind... ?

I spent a lot more on my dress than I originally planned however it is less than the Stewart Parvin dress I was convinced I was having.

Shoes, veil and necklace are a lot more than I was going to spend too...

But I think if I did it any other way I would have regrets and I hope this is the only time I'm going to do this. Funny how I can always justify spending more - especially to the boy and the Mother! What can I say? It's a skill.

My one extragavance was our string quartet - £395.

But, I paid for it (and therefore justified it) with the interest from my Halifax shares (the one's i've had since I was about 15 and always said i'd use on my wedding but are actually now worth about 50p! ?).

String quartet for us too. Yes, we could have had an mp3 player, and I'd probably have been OK with that, but a live quartet will just add an extra touch of gorgeousness!

Mine has been my dress and my BM dresses, I bought one dress for me, but I wasn't too sure, so I am buying another one Smiley smile My BM dresses are £270 each which is definately a lot more that I wanted to spend, but hey they are my special girls and they love them, they'll also be able to wear them again which is a bonus.

I'm sure I will find other things along the way for example, I would like to have some giant garden games in case the sun is shining!!

    Hello shoey how is organising?

Well extravagances I think we have been pretty good so far we are still in budget so I am a happy bunny.

My dress is an extravagence and then some in my opinion but I am paying for that myself with some money I was left by my mum so I can justify it (although still far more than I ever dreamt I would spend).

Our photographer is pricey but it was a must and we included it in the budget and we aren't being videoed so it doesn't feel like an extravagance.

I guess the only thing we have gone over budget on is flowers but they are important to me and I love our florist and we have saved in other areas of the budget so OH would say extravagence but I say not!

WshoegalS. We were fairly restrained on the wedding budget (my whole outfit cost under £300 I think!) - we kept the guest list very small so we could have the gorgeous venue and amazing food - but we went totally mad on the honeymoon, spent about double what I'd reckoned and even that seemed like a heeeyooooge amount to spend on a holiday. That said, would not change it for the world. The whole day and definitely the whole fortnight in Mexico was incredible and the memories are worth the money!

ETA: I forgot my lovely, full length green velvet coat which was in no way one of the expensive things but I still ummed and erred over it because I wasn't sure I would definitely need it. What was I thinking? it was Scotland, by a lochside in late November - of course I was going to need it!

Anytime I've ended up at a Wedding Fayre I've suddenly had the urge to buy everything...

Toastmaster - yes we need that, choc fountain - yes, a floor that lights up instead of a normal floor - of course!

Then I get home and remember I really really do not need these things and get annoyed with myself for leaving my number with them as I then have to politely say I'm no longer interested!

    I would love a harpist...

I've cut back on my photographer - just basic pics of the wedding itself, but then I keep thinking how I'd love pics of me getting ready. I'm still having inner turmoil about that.

One thing we have splurged on is honeymoon - not booked it yet but we know it's going to be a whopper!

    Hiya

I would say that the Honeymoon is very extravagant but we decided on this first and what we wanted and then the wedding around it.

But I budgetted £700 on my wedding dress and have now doubled it..! but its going to be lovely and because of the colour I had to have it made, there would have been lovely dresses within £700 budget if I had wanted ivory etc.

The other thing I am thinking of is a surprise live entertainment for the OH in the eve which is going to be £500 and I keep thinking no... but it would be great and I could pay this off in my next bonus.. so I'm still dithering.

    lol

    xx

Peonies are a symbol of a happy marriage..or something. Read it in a wedding magazine (so it must be true), and immediately requested them for our church flowers!
