Houses - good and bad things

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 30 April, 2012 at 11:44 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 41

Apropos of nothing, honest ?

What features would put you off a house? What do you really like?

I don't like: kitchens open to the living rooms, brown UPVC window frames, small attic rooms that push the price up while being functionally useless, "old" gas fires, "some" feature wallpaper.

I do like: wet room style bathrooms (especially ensuite!), at least two downstairs living areas, sunny gardens, chimney breasts and alcoves.

I don't like houses with one bathroom/one loo. Or funny shaped sitting rooms that don't have a central feature and an obvious way to arrange furniture well. Conservatories are always too hot or too cold in my experience.

I love big sunny kitchens that are large enough for a dining table. A separate dining room too. Double fronted house always look lovely to me. A driveway and a garage and a nice big garden with extension potential.

Being that we are currently living in a tiny 2 bed flat I would just like a house! I dont care what it looks like!

however, in an ideal world my preferenced would be -

Like - Bay windows, islands in the kitchen, range cookers, chimney breasts and fireplaces (proper ones!) Large glossy painted front doors and sash windows.

Dont like - Tiny gardens, feature walls in every room or tiny rooms that cant be used for anything, not a massive fan of new build houses but i dont hate them, would just prefer a victorian one!

I thnk most things can be changed and i would rather make a house my own than move straight in and not change it.

Like: proper fireplaces, old characterful houses, separate kitchen from lounge, pretty south facing garden, plenty of parking space, hallways- not straight into a room, desperate shower.

Dislike: wood chip walls, tacky fireplaces, downstairs bathroom, overlooked gardens

Agree. Or, worse, those wardrobe/cupboard units that go right over the top of the bed and also have two attached bedside tables. Ugh, not for me.

This is making me sad. I'm leaving behind a spacious 4 bed detached with a bay window, en suite, d/s toilet, dining room and summer house to move to a 3 bed, middle of three houses, with no d/s loo, no en suite, small living room, no storage and a small kitchen. ?

    Must Have

En-suite master (or scope for one)

    Dining room

Large kitchen with room for table (for informal family dining)

    Large garden with privacy

    Would be nice

    Fireplace(s)

    Original features (if period property)

At least one other en-suite bedroom

    Thanks but no thanks

    Ugly windows

    An overlooked garden

The front door opens straight into living room (I must have a hallway)

Just now were living in a tiny 2 bed flat ...... that is begining to feel clostruphobic(sp) now im not working

so the things i dream about on a daily basis in a house are

    Would love

    More than one bathroom

a fire place in the lounge

    bright spacious rooms

a kitchen that could have an island and a table

a garden for the dog to play in .. preferably not overlooked

    loads of storgae space

charachter ( although not too much )

a shed in the garden for OH to cluter with his bits and bobs ... rather than using the spare room/lounge

    Dislikes

New build development where every house is the same ( just personal tatse) although just now would quite happily settle with one of these

walking straight in to living room im a hallway lover and love a nice entrance to a house

Overly modern kitchens with shiny units

neighbours being able to see in your house from theirs

    Likes

Cupboards (lots and lots of them)

    Quirky layouts

    Off street parking

Spacious gardens (lots of room for a lawn)

    Dining rooms

Lots of worktop space in the kitchen

    Dislikes

    En-suite bathrooms

    Lack of storage

Rooms so small there is only one way you could possibly arrange the furniture

    Tiny windows

Doors that open straight into living rooms

Open staircase in the living room.

Front doors that open into kitchens (wtf?!)

I can see through most decorative stuff so swirly carpets and woodchip wallpaper wouldn't bother me if I was buying. Might be more of a consideration for renting.

I like a house to feel like a home. You see some houses that don't have ANY personal touches whatsoever and I don't like that. No photos, no ornaments, nothing. It's like it's just somewhere a person sleeps as opposed to being a home.

I dont like pink rooms, unless it's a child's bedroom.

I like open log fires and biiiiiig kitchens! And oak. I love oak.

We are looking at buying at the moment.

    I hate....

Open plan kitchen/living rooms. I don't want my kitchen in my front room and I wish estate agents would get the hint! Plus why are all new builds like this?!

    Artex

    Those built in wardrobes

    Love....

    A garden, any garden

    High ceilings

    Fireplaces

    Separate kitchen

    Dislike:

    Carpet in kitchen or bathroom
    Separate toilet and bathroom
    Tiny windows
Front doors that open straight into the lounge
    Small kitchen/galley kitchen
No upstairs bathroom (more commonly found in terraced houses in Stoke, I've lived in three like this!)
    1980s-style gas fires
Fire surrounds with no actual fire (again, I've lived in two flats that had this, weird!)
Houses with only one bathroom (just not practical with 6 people in a house)
    Long thin rooms
    Magnolia paint

    LOVE:

    Wooden beams
    Quarry tiles in the kitchen
Open plan kitchen and diner (but only if there's also a dining room/lounge diner)

This exactly. However, I do know what I want:

Bay windows at the front, south facing garden, separate livingroom and dining room and kitchen.

    I do not like:

Open plan kitchen/lounge/diner things, small windows, carpeted bathrooms

My wish list for our next house:

    Downstairs loo

Utility room so that I can shove all my washing in there and not have to have it in the kitchen

Conservatory/sunny kitchen to sit and read the papers on a Sunday

    Island kitchen

    Large bedrooms

    Decent garden

    Garage

    Plenty of storage

    Dislikes:

I used to work as a letting agent so had some serious house envy at times, but also saw some monsters.

    Love

    Mezanine levels

    Big kitchens with an island

    Sunny gardens

    Ensuite to master

    spacious hallways

    converted buildings eg converted barn

    Hate

    Galley kitchen

    Bathroom with a separate toilet

    bathrooms with carpet (vomit)

Rooms described as double when they fit a double bed but literally nothing else.

    Avocado bathrooms

    Dislike:

I used to dislike new builds but as we're looking at the 'Newbuy' government scheme for our first house I'm talking myself round. I hate that you get less space though.

I am dealing with lots of letting agents at the moment. I know they work for the landlord and all but some of them are winding me off the clock.

You think they might mention a f*ck off electricity pylon with one leg in the back garden, but no Smiley smile

No, it would annoy me too much, my boss always used to write it in the descriptions and I would have to do the viewings. As soon as the tenants turned up it was a no go because the room was too small, huge waste of time so I made sure I never did it. Definitely used the crafty camera angles though, sometimes you have to just to get people through the door.

Slightly OT but I cannot bear estate agents photographs where the owner just hasn't cleared up/prepared - washing up on the draining board, cluttered kitches with cereal packets aon the worktops, a heap of luridly coloured children's toys in the sitting room, frilly dollies on the bed, heaps of clothes on bedroom floor.....you get the picture? You're telling me your house has no storage and you don't care.

Why would anyone present their house like this and why would the estate agent allow them to?

    Clear it up people!!!

Ali you would hate my house too, my kitchen is bright pink with pink accessories. Amezzin!! ❤️

    I like:

    Kitchen diners
Utility room (for all my cra p)
    Plenty of bathrooms
    En-suite
Garage (for all my cra p)
    Detatched if possible

My dream house would be an old barn conversion with really high ceilings and wooden beams.

    Dislike:

    Small rooms

Can't really think of much else, as Tricks said most things can be changed like bathrooms and kitchens. When we bought our house the kitchen wasn't even that bad but we still ripped it all out and started again to our taste. It's easily done.

Amnesia, this also used to drive me mad. Sometimes I would turn up specifically to take pictures and the place would be a complete state. If the owner was home you can try and subtly hint they move a few things but it usually doesnt help. If i was there alone there was no way I was going to touch their mouldy old rubbish. The absolute worst is when homeowners have a 'feature' that they are really proud of and want to make sure is in the pictures. By feature I mean, millions of cuddly toys, or flowery carpet or some hideous art. Can you tell I really loved this job?

Estate agents drive me mad... ours turned up without his fecking camera - we had to take our own photos!!!

I wouldn't dream of not clearing up and presenting my house when selling. Spent all weekend preparing for a 15 minute viewing on Sunday!!

There was a house we were looking at buying, until we realised that they have actually sold off their garden and a developer has built another house on it! cleverly photographed so that you can't see this!

Anyone remember the power station/cottage story?
