How long did it take you to decide on honeymoon?

moonpie1985, 6 December, 2011 at 22:17 Posted on Planning 0 21

Me and OH have been looking to book our honeymoon since September.

It is now getting into December and still can't decide what we want to do.

We have so far considered:

Mexico, Egypt, Greece, Italy, New York, Driving Tour of Europe, Route 66 Tour, Croatia, Canada, Cottage in UK.

Our problem seems to be the pressure we are putting on ourselves due to it being a honeymoon.

We have lived together for the last 7 years and only ever gone on holidays together in Europe or the UK, or to USA to see family.

But there is nothing that comes to mind that either of us really want to do. He just definitly doesnt want to do the same thing we have done for the last 7 years, and all I really want to do is go to New York at Christmas.

Being traditional though we definitly have decided that we want to take our honeymoon directly after getting married.

July just seems terrible for going on holiday.

We visted the travel agent this weekend just gone and she told us that we would be silly to consider Mexico due to the weather and the humidity, and that Egypt would be way too hot. And then went on to say that Europe would be terribly busy and crowded, and overpriced due to the time of year.

Neither of us are beachy types.

I just feel like completly giving up or re-arranging the whole wedding for the winter just so that we can do some of the other ideas I have had, such as New York at Christmas, or Austin, Texas for the Grand Prix in November.

Is anyone else having as much trouble as we are?

Nope - we picked a hotel we loved in Mexico and that was that. We've been away to tropical places during the humid/rainy season before, and we've always found that it rains in short heavy spurts, and the rain is always lovely and warm...if I'm in the pool already I don't bother to get out!

Wow! You have so many options!

I can't be too helpful as I booked our honeymoon as a surprise and I knew exactly what I wanted to do, because it was something we'd talked about before but never thought we'd do for a few years - DisneyWorld in Florida Smiley laugh He never went as a child, so he'll be ecstatic! (Nothing to do with me wanting to go to Harry Potter World, oh no..)

Our wedding is in July as well and it seemed that was to me too, very expensive and so many places at their hottest and busiest. If you really want to do it straight afterwards though, you may have to think creatively, or go back to a different travel agent who can do the creative thinking for you. There must be something out there which fits the bill ! I ended up leaving a 2 month gap between wedding and honeymoon, not exactly ideal but saved a lot of money and opened up more options.

Have not booked ours yet either am actually considering doing a last minute deal to cyprus, we get married on the sat and flights to southern cyprus are sundays or wednesdays from bristol so hoping to book for the weds and get a better deal on a nicer hotel, we dont have a lot of spare cash but still want somewhere nice, it will be hot there but its not as bad as egypt and i have been in the summer and coped well with it before, if we cant get that we will have to postpone until we can afford to pay more for it but like you would have loved to go straight after the wedding x

If you're not beachy people, how about a city break to somewhere like Iceland, it's lovely in July. Then do New York at Christmas.

We are beachy people and always wanted a villa on the beach so we're going to the Maldives.

In the nicest way, do you actually CARE where you go? Or are you completely open to ideas? July may be terrible for those places in monsoon/hurricane zones or those busy European beaches, but it's brilliant for Australasia/Indonesia/east Asia.

For what it's worth (and I have lauded it many times), we went to Malaysia and Bali and it was a perfect mix of relaxing beach, culture and city. The weather in Bali in July should be perfect.

Try the above website, on the "Inspiration" tab. You tick some boxes about your interests/etc and it tells you the perfect place for your time of year. If you select "Summertime" and "Culture and history" it tells you to head to Australia.

I would definitely not move the wedding! It took us a while to decide, as we're going straight on from our wedding in Australia, so we needed to see how the flights worked out. In the end, we're going to Fiji, then San Fransisco and Las Vegas.

I've been to Jamaica in August and the weather was absolutely fine. Had a couple of stormy afternoons, but other than that, it was glorious sunshine.

Why not take a long weekend or even a week to Paris, Barcelona, Venice etc straight after the honeymoon and then save up for a big trip later in the year?

It didnt really take us to long as I found like you looking for a honeymoon in June/July the prices are high, and in the ended found long haul to be the cheaper option. We are going to San Francisco, Hawaii and then Las Vegas. 3 totally different places, yes Hawaii will be the more relaxing but I'm sure we will be exploring the islands.

It took us ages to decide. We discussed quite a few options: Thailand, Safari, Dubai, Greek Island , Huski Sledging, and H wanted to do the Inca trail?!

We had our honeymoon in September and went on Safari then onto Zanzibar.

    Yikes.

Its not what you would call cheap, as I'm fussy and like decent hotels, so we are stopping in 4* or 5*. Its 4 nights in SF, then 7 nights in Hawaii and then 4 nights in Vegas, including all flights (Newcastle - London -SF - Hawaii - Vega - London - Newcastle) so much travelling, its about £4k for both of us.

But if you shop around, choose different hotels, and of course organise it your self you could probably get it cheaper. We have booked with Virgin, I've never done long haul and just feel happier someone else has sorted it, and have that little bit extra cover.

I looooooove this idea. Over budget for us though, we can only go to about £2.5k

I'm really struggling with ideas too. Caribbean was my first thought but we'd be going end of September/beginning of October and I keep reading about hurricane seasons, puts me off! I want to go long haul, so Europe is out. OH won't go to Australia or anywhere quite as far flung as that. He wanted to do LA until I told him we'd need to hire a car. Why is it so difficult to decide?!

It didn't take us too long to decide where we were going, but we haven't booked anything yet. We are getting married in July as well and are having our honeymoon in November as the weather will be better and we have also booked a cottage in Scotland for a few days after the wedding for our minimoon Smiley smile

I really don't think you should move the wedding to suit the honeymoon, more the other way around.

I think I win this - we've been married for 7 months today and we've still not finalised our plans and we're going in 2 months! KL, NZ and South Pacific.

There was only 1 place I had always thought of going on honeymoon so that's where we booked to go, luckily OH was up for it too!

I don't see why you're willing to compromise your honeymoon and go somewhere just for the sake of it, just so you can go straight after your wedding. Why not wait until september/october and go somewhere you really want to, or just go to New York at Christmas if that's what you want to do. It will give you something else to look forward to.

H2b and i are the same so what we did in the end is ask our friends where there best holidays were, and most said Greece so in the end we chose Santorini we arent beachy types either but we like history and we liked the idea of island hopping Smiley smile

i agree egypt will be too hot, november is usually best for african countries.

Croatia was the second favorite for the people we knew as well so I would go with one of those, plus its nice not to have such a long flight to your honeymoon x

We are having the same trouble you are. Neither myself of OH are particularly well travelled-the furthest either of us have been is Florida and our usual holidays are within Europe such as the canaries and Cyprus. Because of this we wanted to do something a bit more special but are struggling to find places we both agree on that aren't too expensive. We are paying for a lot of the wedding ourselves and really can't justify spending 4k on a honeymoon!!!

We're looking at Italy, and visiting Rome, Vneice & Milan. or America and doing a big tour, seeing friends in California, then Las Vegas & New York over 2 - 3 weeks, depending on budget. xx
