Is this poem any good?

bardisio, 31 May, 2011 at 21:55 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi,

I am in the preperation stages of my speech and was thinking about adding in a poem, but the problem is I know nothing about poetry. I did find this one and liked it, just wanted some feedback as to if its any good or not?

There are no words to express
how much I truely care
so many times I fantisize of
feelings we can share
My heart has never known
the Joy u bring to me
As if GOD knew what I wanted
and made you a reality
I'd die to hold you or to kiss you
or merely to see your face
my stomach quivers my body shivers
and my heart increases pace
to give me money or lots of gold
would not be the same to me
I prayed and watched the distant stars
and finally you came to me!

any feedback greatfully appreciated

Not really into poetry much myself but I quite like it, although I can't put my finger on why if that makes sense?

Not for me. I like poetry in general but this one has, in the words of AC, zero literary merit - it belongs on a greetings card. Also, I think I'd rather hear genuine, original words rather than a poem from the internet.

I have no particular feelings either way about the poem itself, but why do you want to include a poem, seeing as you say you know nothing about it? I'd understand the inclusion of a poem if you'd written it yourself, or if you were both into poetry and had a particular poem that meant a lot to you. As it is, if you're planning on reading it out to your OH during your speech, I think it'd be a bit cringeworthy for your guests.

I'm afraid I'm not too keen on it either - Sorry...

I think it would be a lot more moving if the same sentiment were said in your own words, and not in a poem as its a speech.

You could always find a more classic poem and have it at a reading in the ceremony?

    Not a fan, sorry.

I wouldn't have liked my husband to have nabbed a few lines off the internet to read out to me. His own poem, fine (or at least a literary great!).

My other issue with it is the line "I'd die to hold you or to kiss you or merely see your face' - erm, you'll have just married him, you can look right over any time...

Agreed I'm afraid, too cheesy for me but I'm not really a soppy person.

If you like it though I really don't see why our opinion matters? x

No, that's just being nice here, Trickers! No fluffiness allowed in the Fight thread

I don't like it either sorry. Definitely a Hallmark card entry type poem. If you like it and think it would mean something to your OH, use it.
