Saving up...

Storky, 1 March, 2012 at 09:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 44

CNumber's thread got me thinking. Those who are saving at the moment, what are you saving for?

We're saving for our forever home (current priority), holidays and kids generally and I'm saving up for a watch that I want to buy for my 30th.

You?

We are currently saving all our pennies for the wedding, and then once June is gone we'll move onto something else. I want to clear some credit card debt, and have been doing so for the last 12 months- I am getting there! We're a probably one move away from out forever home, so I guess you could say we are saving for our next home after the wedding.

I'm trying to rebuild/avoid using any more of our "oh sh!t fund" after a year of living off one income. Also have to save up for when we eventually get pregnant (or potentially for treatment to get us pregnant.) Sorry, that's a bit woe is me isn't it?

On a happier note I'm also saving up for the day I can afford to redecorate the spare room properly.

We're saving to get the kitchen re-tiled ? and a different car for me.

We'd also like a holiday, but as my hours have been cut at work I think we may have to abandon that idea.

Holiday (hurrah), retirement (depressing), and the coast ring I posted on here a bit ago.

Happily the tax man has just told me he owes me £95 (from 5 years ago!) so that might just go on the latter....

Currently saving everything for new house, then maternity leave hopefully (worked out what I would be losing in pay... it's shocking!)

    Wedding ?

    Then house/babies/family car etc.

Try and put a little aside each month to allow us a little holiday each year as well and small treats for ourselves.

? this is OH too except he doesn't fully understand how expensive babies will be. He understands that we need to save for a house first but sees that only as a means to having a baby (and a dog!) Bless him!!

We're just saving for savings sakes just now. We're going to go on holiday, but they kind of get paid for out our wages instead of the savings. Got an amazing deal for 4 nights at a caravan park for £99 at the end of April, so i'm looking forward to that!

I just like having money sitting so that i know i can cope if we have an emergency.

We've got the money for our honeymoon, so just need to get organised and BOOK THE DAMN THING!

Our main savings aim is a house, though I don't want to buy one in London so it'll be at least two years before we actually do that.

I am terrible at savings for savings sake, it burns a hole in my pocket if I am not saving for something specific !! OH saves a small amount each month and uses that for his fishing trips, stag do's etc and presents throughout the year for birthdays, mothers day etc (He is shocking at budgetting for birthdays and things in his monthly income whereas I budget for these sorts of things in the month that they arise).

At the moment I am saving personally for my holiday spending monies and once they are all done in August the plan is for us to both save to move house, although we are currently debating staying put and being able to sustain the slightly more affluent lifestyle we have been able to afford since we have not been paying for the wedding !

We have totally seperate finances, we both pay in to a joint bills account each month that all our direct debits come out of but other than that he has his money and I have mine.

Our first home! We're literally waiting to hear this afternoon if we've got a mortgage agreed in principle for a flat we want to put an offer on, so fingers crossed! After that, it will be saving for tiles and carpets and paint hehe.

I'm another one that likes saving for the sake of it - In fact its going to feel very strange to see all those savings go into property and have none left in the bank and have to start over. Find it well satisfying to see the savings gradually creeping up!

    This!

    Mine is:

    Pay off credit card

Last minute holiday abroad (I've never done it but have always wanted to)

    Wedding

    Babies

I feel lucky that Mr R had his own home when we met so thats one less thing to panic about saving for.

We are saving up for a house (or more likely flat). We already have a £30k deposit but that won't go far in London.

I'd also like to put a bit of money away to use for if I am lucky enough to have a baby - I have a very generous maternity policy from work but will probably be off work for at least 6 months if not a year.

This thread has inspired me... I have the day off tomorrow so I'm going to do a proper budget (keep meaning to and putting it off) and work out where we could cut back to put more into the savings.

There's nothing like a DD out of your a/c and into a savings a/c the day after pay day to make you save. I feel flush for all of one day, and then it's all gone!

We cut back substantially by just using cash. We withdraw £50 a week to cover our meals, a coffee or two over the weekend and squash courts twice a week and it really makes me think about how to spend it. When I used to use my debit card and not really think about what I was buying I'd spend an embarrassing multiple of that each week.

    This!

Currently saving for wedding - will be all paid inc. Honeymoon by end of 2012

Then we will be saving as a back up fund as I'm hoping to be a full time student for nine months starting Sept 13

    Forever house, family, etc. etc.

More immediately we are saving for a new bathroom suite, to have our utility room tiled, and H2B needs a new car so we will probably get one that we can share.

I actually find it better to use my card so that at the end of the month I know exactly where my money has gone. H is a cash person like you, but I know I'd just spend the cash and wonder where it'd gone. I suppose the solution to this is to only carry a debit card to an account which you transfer the £50 p/w into.

Now this is a good idea. I am not good with cash, tend to spend whatever amount I give myself and not know where it has gone. Might have a think about this when doing my budget tomorrow!

We are currently saving fot the wedding, but as soon we're married we will put our flat on the market and so will be saving for our house. I probably could save a bit more than i do, but i like to have some spare to treat myself every now and then. But whatever's left at the end of the month, gets put in my savings account. ?
