Sky V vs Virgin Media

Flowmojo, 12 October, 2012 at 11:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 26

With me going on maternity leave next year we are looking at reducing any uneccesary outgoings for a year.

I know we have sky plus HD, with multiroom, and internet and phoneline. We dont have sports package or films, just the basic packages. I wouldnt have had a clue how much we spent on it! ! Mr F has informed me sky are putting up prices and from next month we will be paying nearly £70 a month just for the basic stuff we have!!

So hes been looking into Virgin, they have an offer on..it has all the channels we watch, and we c an still get HD and faster internet and multiroom for much much less a month til april next year, and then itl go up but STILL be way less then sky plus a month. So this makes sense to change now as the offer expires end of October.

My question is, does anyone have Virgin with tivo? is it ok ,have you had any problems?

The thought of getting rid of Sky gives me serious anxiety.

I have virgin with TiVo, never had any problems although if I'm honest I prefer the older V+ box but I probably don't use TiVo to its full potential. I'd never go with sky, yeah they have more HD channels blah blah blah but virgins On Demand service wins hands down and if there's ever a problem they always come out straight away to fix it.

From reports I've heard, Tivo is miles better than sky+. We'd have it but we can't get virgin in our area.

We have Sky and have all the channels you can have but have no multiroom or H and we pay £56.

Not got Tivo but I will never ever ever go with Virgin again. In our student house they were a nightmare. They oversold the internet packages in our area (5 times over) and we frequently went days with no internet at all. There were even protests outside the shop in town. We also had to have 4 phone numbers in 2 years because they kept messing up the numbers. People trying to ring us would get other people and we got lots of calls for someone else. Eventually the connection just didn't work and we ended up spending a lot of money on mobiles trying to sort it.

Sorry for the rant, I have heard other people singing Virgin's praises just wanted to put my experience.

We pay something ridiculous for Sky like £80 but we have the whole movie and sports pack plus multiroom.

We can't get Virgin in our area but PIL have a flat in Swansea that we visit a few times a year and we always watch a movie or old sitcoms from the On-demand service which is way better than Sky Anytime.

My sister switched to virgin from sky and HATED it. I know alot of people that are happy with it though. I wish we could switch for cost reasons but OH would literally keel over if he didn't have the full sky sports package. Saddo.

We have been considering moving from Sky to Virgin as its a bit cheaper for us but ive heard so much negativity about Virgin’s customer service (or lack of) that I haven’t made the move yet.

See with Virgin we can get it all for less then £30 a month, miles better then nearly 80 and get multiroom and HD! i think Mr F has looked into if we have it on our area, we do, and sounds from what ive read that Virgins better then Sky+ in areas that can recieve it..hurrah!

As someone that has had both Sky and Virgin I have to say that Virgin are the outright winners in terms of Product, price, customer service, everything really. We have Tivo and it really is amazing, you can record up to 3 things at the same time that's just one of the perks but that little box of tricks can do wonders. So for £75 a month we have Tivo downstair, V + plus upstairs with the full package, sports, HD the lot, telephone and the quickets broadband, we have been with Virgin coming up to 5 years now in that time we have never had a single bad word to say about them, we once had a problem with our V plus and an engineer was out the next door with a replacement box. We often have Sky sales people come to our door to try and beat our package through Virgin and they never can. Virgin all the way.

Snap. OH has all that crap, even Man U TV, does my head in!

I refuse to pay for sky becasue its 90% his stuff - For all I watch a digital box would do me.

If / when I get pregnant we will seriously need to consider this & OH £ would need to cover the necessities ie food not football.

For those who use the Sports package, you get ESPN free with Virgin, you have to pay for it with Sky.

Virgin is way better than Sky, but can't comment on Tivo.

We can't get Virgin in our house, I miss it so much!

I would choose Virgin over Sky every time! ?

My H would feel the same, I wouldn't even dare suggest it to him.

Why don't you ring sky and tell them how much cheaper you can get it with Virgin and see what they offer you?

I cancelled our complete Sky package the other week and no joke I think they would have agreed to anything to get me to stay. We had the basic package for the Tv which is about £21 per month but they said they would reduce that 'considerably' I didn't find out the actual amount though because I genuinely did just want to cancel. I must have had about 5 phone calls at different stages trying to tempt me back.

Just bear in mind you could cancel your multiroom cos your sky box will work as a freeview box still (but they do wipe your recordings off the box after 30 days of cancelling ? )

Yeh I think you have to be put through to the cancellations department before you start getting them down on price.

We have Sky+ with normal channels and sky sports, sky 40mb broadband and phone. This is a about £70. We don't have multidimensional as we have one of those signal mice do can watch sky in the bedroom but have to watch the same channel. We can't get the cheapest internet as BT own about 10ft of cable which they lease to sky! We might look at changing when we move but not sure yet.

£70 on tv and broadband ? Blimey.

We have Sky think its about £30 our broadband is unlimited with orange and Free . Well it is but they now are taking it away and I have to look into actually paying for it. I was going to look into sky but that's scared me a bit now.

We don't pay for multiroom as with Mrs C we have one if those Magic Mouse doofers instead.

I would love Virgin especially because my sister works for them do I could get a massive discount but alas I live in the sticks and can't get it Smiley sad

We used to have Virgin in our old house and loved it but when we moved we couldn't get Virgin so we got a freeview box instead which we later upgraded to and HD recordable freesat box which we love! At the moment you can't watch something else live if you are recording, but that's only because H hasn't fitted the secondary cable, but we have so much stuff recorded that it's no big deal. We have an super dooper TV as well which is connected to the internet so we can rent movies through Love Film or Blinkbox. The box cost about £200 initially but we don't then pay anything monthly other than the phone and internet charge which is £18 if I remember rightly.

We have a freesat+ HD box so it is plugged in to the satellite that was here when we moved in. We can record 2 things at once and watch a third or a recording at the same time. It's free after you've bought the box so we just pay around £20 for our phoneline/broadband. We don't watch any football in this house though!

We have Virgin and it's been terrible. Their customer service is awful, it's run by muppets. Our phone has broke repeatedly, our tv and Internet broke for two weeks and our Internet is so slow compared to what we should be getting. They are rubbish.

We have a freesat HD box and I think it's great. We've got double cables so we can record and watch something else. The only problem is you can't get the sky channels or things like UK gold. So I can't watch glee. I don't know what sports channels there are cos neither of us watch football.

We have virgin with TiVo, 20m broadband and a phone line and it's £35 a month. We don't have movies or sport channels though.

The TiVo box is good, I've never had sky so can't compare it for you but I know my parents were paying £90 a month with sky, they had so many channels there would never be enough hours in the day to watch it all! They changed to virgin and it saved them about £40 a mon as my dad has all the sports channels.

We don't have it in our bedroom though, mainly as the tv up here is so small you can bareley see it from the bed so there doesn't seem any point in paying more to have extra channels, we just have a cheaply freebies box so we can have the radio on in the morning, is that an option as opposed to getting the multiple stuff?
