Sweets from the past!

(Claire), 16 August, 2012 at 15:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 61

H has been packed in smoking now for nearly 6 weeks I am a very proud wife, it has been a struggle for him but he can now see the wood for the trees - anyway he used gum to start with and then weened himself off it by wait for it..... sucking on jawbreakers! Remember the ones from when we were kids, gobstopper esque, sometimes sour sometimes not, I had one the other day and forgot how much I loved them! Today I also bought a packet of Space Raiders crisps in pickled onion flavour oh my they are sensational! Bring back the sweets and crisps of the past I say! What were your faves? I loved nerds too!

Mmm do you remember bitza pizza crisps? Pyramint? Meanies? Thingies. What was the one and it was a choc bar with like bits of either mint or orange in, was it BITZ? You could get them gobstoppers in a hot flavour that burnt the mouth off you aswell they were red, then turned pink, then white. Jolly ranchers. Tab cola. I'll be back with more, this is one of my fave subjects!

They don't seem very common but they sold them at our corner shop.

Basically imagine little balls of Fry's Mint Cream.

I LOVED the white chocolate ones of these (Jazzies). The pound shop near us sells them in huge bags and I am so tempted but I know I'd eat the entire bag, so I don't buy them ?

I used to love sherbet dip dabs, and a sour fizzy sweet I can't remember the name of.

Did any of you used to have a mobile shop that would come round (like an icecream van but it sold milk, bread, teabags and sweets), or was that just a northern thing?

Yeah we did, but then I am northern. It was simply called the van. We had 2 stationary "the vans" too. One in the park round the corner, one at the top of the street. They would park up in the morning and drive off about 6pm. Most streets in Liverpool had one in the 80's. If your road didn't have a shop you would have a van/mobile, Hence Ron dicksons MOBY DICK MOBILE SHOP on Brookside!

We called it "the van" too. It didn't stay all day though it would just come round probably every few hours. It used to sell single fags to the older kids! Naughty!

Ours did this too! We called them "loosies" and they were 20p each. Terrible really. We thought it was great at the time though!

There were these bags of crisps, and they were tomato flavour and they were 5 or 10p a packet. Can't remember what they were called though.

We used to go to the shop, buy loads of them, go to the park, sit up a tree and eat them.

    Oh, and Panda Pops!!

ETA: They were called Tangy Toms!

And, there was a time when you could get Cheetos in this country - they were amazing. Much better than Wotsits.

    Chocolate fags.

I miss all the additives and colours the most - I used to get such a rush from them.

Oh my God, seriously?!?! At proper, English prices? Or ridiculous these-are-American-so-we're-going-to-charge-£5-per-pack-to-rinse-you-of-all-your-money prices?

Me and my sister used to walk to the shops and get them candy sticks that looked like cigarettes and pretend to be real cool and 'smoke' them. Makes me laugh now because I think smoking is the uncoolest thing ever, we were about 10 at the time though!

Pint pots. We have a sweet shop (yum yums) that sells them, £1 a bag, along with other childhood favourites.

I used to like the petrified prawn 10p crisps.

Secrets-( with the chocolate moose type stuff in the middle)

Moments (the gooey/stringy caramel with the hazelnut in the middle)
