"I’m sad to share the very upsetting news that Twiga passed away on Saturday morning following a two and a half year battle with cancer. She was with the people she loved most in the world: her husband, her dad and her dogs.

She was a wonderfully kind and joyous person who embraced life and was determined to live each day to the full. She fitted more into her 28 years on this earth than many will in a lifetime and touched so many people in different ways, including many of you on here. Her passing so young is just a cruel and devastating waste. She leaves behind family and friends whose lives will never be whole ever again.

She was private about her illness much of the time but this is a vital opportunity to remind you all of the importance of cancer screening. Her death may well have been preventable had she been screened earlier and I know that she felt very strongly that her case should be held up as an example to highlight that nothing concerned with health is worth delaying for any reason whatsoever. Lives have been utterly shattered beyond repair and I would hate for that to happen to any of you or your loved ones.

I am sure that she has left her mark on this place like she has with all the places she visited (mainly due to her ludicrous clumsiness), and that her memory can live on here. Thank you for the kind messages you have sent me in recent days, to see how much she was loved by your community is truly a comfort.

Mr Twiga xx

A footnote from Footlong: Over the past year, we have all been privileged to share time with Twiga. She filled our community with laughter and happiness, and not a small amount of sheer craziness. Even when her own battles were difficult, she showed compassion and kindness to those who needed it. The girl behind the giraffe was as beautiful, as funny and as vibrant in real life as she was here, and the loss to those who loved her is unimaginable. To Mr Twiga and the rest of her cherished family, I send my very best ((hug)).

In all this, there is a message that absolutely cannot be lost or ignored. However, it is not my message to give, it is Twiga’s.

*sensitive, but very important*

My whole cancer journey started with my first routine smear test that I had in 2011 when I was 25. I just had a letter from the GP drop through my letterbox and went along totally carefree. Needless to say the results that came back were just awful and I had two years of treatment/operations as a result of them. I had a blissful cancer-free period last year that I shall be eternally grateful for. However as of Jan 2014 the f*cker seems to have decided to spread upwards and outwards and I will not ever be able to say I am cancer free again.

I'm not saying this for the love (please don't actually - I feel the love already and I love you all back). I'm saying this out of a sense of duty that no one should have to deal with this and the thought that there are people out there who are not showing up for smear tests and the like really upsets me. I got 'called' at 25 and it should have been much earlier. I wish I had been 'called' at 23. I wish I had been 'called' at 19. Fark, I wish I had a friggin smear test everyday. So any Otters or lurkers reading this - get off your arses now (or at least first thing tomorrow) and please PLEASE get yourself booked in for a smear. And feel your boobs too,

Right, my Otter Rock and I shall now get off our soapbox and return to the party thread.

Thanks to this thread, I didn't put off my smear test. As per usual it was a nightmare (they always have problems) and I almost fainted. But it was worth it. I got a 'normal' result in the post today and I immediately thought of Twiga.

Everyone should have this test done from the time they are sexually active (which could be under 16) or at least 18. I have signed petitions now and talked to all my female friends making sure they know the importance of having their smear done. Twiga has now touched many lives and helped many people. It's so sad that she has gone, but she has definitely left a positive mark on society. Smiley heart

Ashamed to say I've been putting this off, but after half an hour of trying to get through on the phone mine is booked in for next Monday morning =) it's my first, honestly I'm really nervous because I don't know what to expect, having to get it done in a foreign country doesn't help but once it's done it's done.

I was telling the ladies at work about Twiga - when E said she hadn't had hers done for ages. She had just been 'too busy' and had eventually forgotten to go. The worst thing is that she's actually had cervical cancer before!!! She said she will book next week but we're going to keep on at her until she finally does book her appointment.

I meant to mention this earlier. I told my friend about this, and it encouraged her to phone her doctors to book a smear test, she was refused as she's only 23...

After reading this post I booked my first smear test 2 year late. It was abnormal. Got a appointment at the hospital on the 19th may. I'm so glad I read this and got it done even if it Is late. At least now it can be dealt with. Scary stuff :-(.

    ?

It's not pleasant but oh so important!

I got my "normal" result last week thankfully. I'll make sure to have a chat to my girlfriends about this to make sure they've all been for theirs!

Even if you have to nag you Dr, if you think something is wrong, please keep going back, they will eventually listen!

I had my 1st smear at 20 after a year of requesting one, the results came back abnormal and I had 3 years of 6 monthly smears, colposcopies and tests. Thankfully after 3 years my cells have returned to normal and I am back on yearly checks.

Yes they aren't pleasant, but I would have smear tests weekly if it meant spotting something early on. Please don't put it off, as a woman of 25 who has had far more than my 'fair share' of them, I encourage anyone who has a feeling that something isn't quite right to get it looked at.

BrideToBe3326 - please don't worry, abnormal cells doesn't always mean the worst, and like me it means that at least you are now 'in the system' and will get seen regularly until it can be sorted.

Just to bump this again... I went for my first today and I was really nervous and had been putting it off. For anyone who's putting it off because they're worried about going, don't be. It takes all of 10 seconds for them to do the test and it doesn't hurt at all.

Out of curiosity, in the UK how long does it take to get the results? I'm in Italy and was told I'll get a letter in 30-40 days (which seems like a long time to me) but they'll call sooner if there are any abnormalities.

I was told 2 weeks but it ended up being more like 3 because of Easter bank holidays.

If you are sensitive to smear tests like I am, then let the nurse who is doing it know. For me they use smaller apparatus and take things very gently as just the smallest 'brushing' causes me to bleed.

Even with my reactions it is not a bad experience just a little uncomfortable for a few seconds.

Regarding results, some places only contact you if there is a problem so be sure to ask what their system is for your results.

I really miss Twiga being about on the forums. Am sure that's another reason why it is quieter. I hope Mr Twiga and all her family are managing as well as can be expected.
